i have always equated organic materials with modern design to the Eames'. Pictures of their case study home in California seemed to exude organic materials and foreign designs as well as modern lines to the furniture and architecture. So, I guess organic modernism is considered trendy, but, to me it's just a realization of the genius of the modern masters.

we're not a big fan of glass-topped tables, but, this seems natural since it allows the design underneath to show. oh, how i love a good 70s vibe.

Oh, mushrooms in this sounds divine. Sautéed in some butter and tossed with parsley...

@kgrote: I have two young sons, a husband, and two cats, and we have managed to keep our painted white cabinets clean. It's not difficult. You just have to use glossy paint. It cleans well. Grimy cabinets are from lack of cleaning, not the color of the paint.

I am also a bit sad when I see brick painted. It's so lovely before. Oh, well. It does look brighter, which is nice for a kitchen.

that beautiful wood wall reminds me of big, midwestern churches built here in the 1970s. That was the best thing about those churches, for sure. :)

Right. If I had the money, I would never ask someone to design my bedroom, or my kitchen, or my bathroom. I'd much rather do all of the scouring for items and measuring myself, while taking care of my family at the same time. Please note the mild sarcasm.

Cool - I have that same fabric on an ottoman in my l.r. that you have on your d.r. chairs. I think I ordered mine from a place in Canada. I'll bet Fabric.com is cheaper. Good to know!

I painted our living room and nursery in Peppergrass by Behr in 2006 and it still looks amazingly modern.

Thankfully, that color is still produced as I need to do touch-ups after having some plaster replaced.

I highly recommend a cheery green.

For the record, the dining room immediately next to the living room is in Honeydew by Behr, and the greens compliment each other beautifully.

Perhaps the landlord can put something in the lease saying that you'll be able to break it and get your deposit back after three months (or something) if the cigarette smoke is intolerable.

I think that trying to contact the current occupant of the apt you'll be renting isn't a bad idea, except that 1) they may have a different tolerance level or 2) the unit has been unoccupied for a time.

I wonder if the landlord mentioned it at all because he had received complaints from renters in your unit previously? If so, that doesn't sound very promising.
