@LyonStill: Having a connected lifestyle is just the way things work now. Even eBook readers allow you to download books, audiobooks or podcasts while on vacation through wireless networks. I like to read articles on Flipboard on my iPad rather than reading a news paper in the morning.

Keeping in touch with family via Skype or email is also very common instead of making long distance calls on your friends phone.

How To Set Up Your Desk & Computer
for Houseguests

Some WiFi routers allow setup of a 'guest' wireless network. This means they can connect to the Internet (possibly even filtered - I.e. blocking torrent downloading) but not access shared network devices like printers, storage/SAN devices, etc.

When you setup that guest account... this is a good time to think about your virus/malware protection, backup strategy and enable whole-disk encryption. Based on how the average PC users behaves online, I would prefer to be safe rather than sorry.

Nice to see there are more higher output LEDs available now but 800 lumens is only equivalent to a 60W incandescent - way too low for some uses in my home.

I prefer the ~3,000K colour temp of halogens vs incandescent in my home. I use LEDs on my car and they are typically 5,000-5,500K to match the xenon headlights.

I got a pair of 800 lumen halogen bulbs for the bedroom months ago from IKEA and they no longer sell them now. They were designed with a clear glass surround like a traditional incandescent bulb but inside there is a halogen bulb. IKEA are stripping out their filament bulbs but their LED selections seem to stop at 400-500 lumen output.

Anyways I have CFL/LED compatible dimmers for the bedroom fixtures so when I need to replace them there may be some cheaper options. Will check out WalMart to see what they have.

@SocialCow:
I am an Apple fan, iPhone4 owner and I totally agree with you. Although I think the iPhone products are great, it's the hotel's own fault for investing in supporting a single platform and proprietary connector. Bluetooth or 3.5mm connectivity (or both) to speakers is completely adequate.

@krmo: Ripping DVDs is a great idea - but I think it is questionable ripping them and then selling. I would rip the DVDs and then keep them hidden away in a closet or storage room.

A Simplified Entertainment Setup For Your Small Space

I've had the new iPad (3rd gen) for a few days and although the screen is superb, I still prefer my e-Ink Sony Reader for books. The reader is so small and light - the iPad way too heavy.

Now for magazines (Zinio of PDF files), the iPad is simply amazing. And I can imagine it would be very useful for text books, particularly books heavy with pictures, etc.

I will continue to use my e-ink device for books and the iPad for everything else. :-)

@thetrickstr: I have be using computers since a kid and now in my late 30's, which is probably why I get eye strain. :-P The fact is that the younger set may have less issues with a backlight display.

I've got a new iPad on pre-order but I don't see any possibility of ditching my Sony T1 Reader any time soon. The text is crisp and there is no backlight on your typical reader which limits eye strain.

I expect to make great use of the iPad for magazine content, but not for books.

If you don't have a need for it right away, I would design the house to accommodate the elevator later and save the $$ for now. Just make sure it is designed to accommodate wheelchairs.

I am not a huge fan of this setup but I do like the lamp. I would find it hard to drop down from dual monitors to a single 21" screen on the iMac. I would consider going from my dual 23" to the 27" iMac - maybe.

What speakers in the pics?

I tend to do this as well and keep the PDFs on DropBox. Any time I have a new item purchased, I just save the PDF and recycle the manual. If the manual is on CD I copy the manual and toss the CD.

I have the previous gen Incase DSLR Sling Pack and it is quite good. The frabric and zippers are a little low rent.

I got mine brand new less than retail off Kijiji but I am annoyed inCase offered a new version so soon. grrr. I knew it would fit a MacBook air perfectly after I bought it... I just might ask a seamstress if they can sew a section in for me.

@Our Semi Organic Life: I agree... With an iPhone sized device, you can do most tasks with one hand. With the Galaxy Note you are often forced to use both hands... problematic if you are carrying a bag, riding the subway, holding your girls hand, etc.

BTW the old phone I sometimes use if the BenQ E72. It was super cheap even way back in 2007 or 2008 when I bought it new for about $100 unlocked!

Pros & Cons of Bigger Smartphone Screens
2/10/12 3:05 PM

I want thin and light in a smartphone, not a huge screen so I can have it with me at all times. The iPhone4 is just about perfect for me... maybe keep the same dimensions with a slightly larger screen and thinner/lighter. That Galaxy note is positively huge next to the iPhone!

I used to use a very tiny Windows Mobile candy bar style phone and I keep it around as my backup (and for times when I don't want to loose/damage my iPhone4).

I think it looks smart but I am not a fan of the wall mounted speakers. Either have them professionally painted white or put them down low under the TV IMO.

Also I like the large sofa which gives you the choice of paying attention to the TV, window or fireplace. I am not a fan of the TV being the focal point and I think this example is a good trade-off.

This is cool. I've been thinking about something like this for those times when I need to store my MacBook Air 11" in the trunk of my car. My work laptop has a lock slot so I keep a cable in the trunk at all times... but the Mac makes me nervous as it has no lock slot.

Looks like Pacsafe have something similar:

My MacBook Air 11" came with Growl installed... is that typical? I am not a Mac power user yet since I do most of my day work in Windows 7. Growl is a great plug-in, however.

Been using an ID clip to hold my headphones for years. Except I wrap the cable around my hand a few times and clip somewhere in the loop - seems to work better for longer cables.

I also sometimes use an Altoid or similar tin when I am trying to keep the headphones from getting crushed in a gear bag.
