Out of storm watch boredom, I actually just baked (something I never do in the summer), making muffins and a gratin.

Off to put my cold brewed coffee in the freezer -- good tip!

A digital scale is a great investment, particularly for macarons where it's all about the technique. Weighing ingredients takes care of at least one variable. My advice: do a complete mise en place before you get started. Good luck!

How timely! I did the Promenades Gourmands macaron class in Paule's kitchen on Monday and can attest that the kitchen island workspace is great (as was the class).

I found the cutest roadside honey house this summer. It was slighly off the beaten path, but must have been successful enough! Also passed an honor-system pie stand that same day (but who knows how long they had been sitting there!).

I actually found napa cabbage at the indoor farmers market in Ithaca, NY a few weeks ago. I made a slaw based on a recipe in Eating Well, combining the cabbage, sliced snowpeas, grated sweet potato and chopped mint and cilantro.

I hate green cabbage but like napa cabbage. Wonder if you could use the napa as a replacement in dishes that traditionally call for green cabbage -- like halupki/galumbki...

I have the Chefmate Dutch Oven from Target - it's my go-to pot. At $40, it was a deal. Not sure they still sell them.

Speaking of Mrs. Meyer's, I noticed my local Marshalls and TJ Maxx selling wipes and dishwashing liquid -- but in Geranium and Baby Blossom scents only. I got some of the Iowa Pine scented products at Target over the holidays, and really like the counter spray.

Braved the New York metro rain to hit the farmer's market for apples! But in an effort to save my strength for the baking marathon ahead (not to mention save a few calories), I made apple sauce instead of pie or cake or a crisp. Tasty and made the house smell great.

Last Sunday, I stuffed some with a corn custard and topped with lots of cheese. They turned out good, but think this is more of a brunch vs. dinner dish:

Sighted Saturday at Union Square Greenmarket in NYC! I think they were from Migliorelli. I bought a few handfuls to snack on at work (with hummus).

I grow a few herbs every summer and just planted mint and basil over the weekend. This year, I am using a 16-inch plastic window box tucked in an out-of-the-way corner of my fire escape (yes, I know it’s still not a great idea). In the past, I had one of those plastic caddies people typically use for cleaning supplies (Michael Graves for Target). It actually worked really well – I could grab it by the handle to drag it closer to the window sill and it was perfectly sized for my miniature sink (if I wanted to give the herbs a good soak). However, the caddy cracked while wintering on the fire escape and Target no longer sells the design.
