@bowsandsparrows & @citizenaugust: the desk is was really simple.

1. get a solid hardwood butcherblock table top (i found it a local woodworking supply place. in Cambridge we also have a place called The Door Store that has that type of stuff. heck, you could probably use one of these IKEA counter tops as well)

2. carefully mask off the edges

3. roll 3 or 4 coats of paint (i used a pale blue) onto the top surface, sanding between each coat.

4. remove masking tape.

5. apply 3 or 4 coats of polyurethane, sanding between each coat. this will protect the paint on the top and make finish nice and hard. it's important that you do the bottom and sides as well so the table top doesn't warp.

6. get some 28" hairpin legs.

7. attach the legs w/ #10 screws

too much detail? ... probably.

hey, thanks for all the kind words everyone.

@thorndale: the boxes under the shelves are hand-me-downs form my mother. i guess that when she was in her 20s everyone in the town that i grew up in had them. they're just super rough /super simple things that were made by a local cabinet maker from whom they get their name: "Butler-boxes". 1970s, hand-made, modular storage complete with period appropriate wine stains and dried candle wax.
