I agree that the cabinets really look quite nice. New hardware is all they need for a fresh update. The counter and floor (especially the floor!) are where your real problems lie. I'd address those first because painting the cabinets is not going to help the overall look of the kitchen. My kitchen cabinets were painted when I bought my house, and while I like the look I hate the maintenance! No matter how nice of a paint job they get dinged up so easily. I'd trade them for natural wood cabinets any day.

A nice glass tile backsplash with a slate gray counter would make those cabinets look fantastic. Do an online search for kitchens with natural wood cabinets and you'll find tons of great inspiration.

I recognize that project from my room in the Spring 2007 Do It Yourself magazine issue. Identical color of blue rugs with red thread. FIY - it's a pain in the rear to do (takes forever to make all of those stitches) and no it cannot be washed. It wasn't long before I upgraded to Flor tiles.

I think that oil can collection is awesome. It is obviously very well loved and immaculately displayed. To me it's a lot more of an issue if you are just buying tons of stuff and tossing it here and there and not really caring for it. Collections sitting in boxes or just creating clutter are a crying shame.

Ultimately all they do is draw more attention to an ugly fence. Seems to defeat the purpose.

At the risk of being redundant I really need one of those white storage drawers! Most of the tiles make my eyes bleed.

These kind of things are so hard to find in good condition and yours look wonderful. Mid-century items like this are coveted by many people. If they really don't work for you as is consider selling them to someone who would love them as they are rather than destroying their original character. Or pack them away carefully and maybe someday they will work better for you.

I recently had a similar pair of chairs reupholstered. I bought some really nice Knoll fabric off ebay for a great price. I purchased 5 yards and that was more than enough for the cushions. There are usually a lot of Maharam fabrics on ebay that would work well too.

I especially like the pops of red on those lights. If they didn't cast a red glow I'd be all over them! I bought a great mid-century light with red shades for my kitchen once and it gave the whole room a demonic glow. Not good!

I'm loving the clouds. It looks very well done and gives the room a great pop. What a fun element to design around! You should spend your time finding furniture that actually works together rather than fixing what isn't broken.

I'm loving slat benches right now. I recently bought a vintage one off ebay for around $300 with shipping. It works out fantastic as a coffee table. http://huntforvintage.blogspot.com/2009/06/before-and-after-cork-lamp.html
