Green marketing at its best (or worst) here. It doesn't look very weatherproof. I'm not sure why you would have a green roof in the country when a bioswale would do the same thing without the weight and moisture trapped on a flat roof. It's tough to be practical when looking over "green" designs.

Air seal all the holes first. Lot's of people skip that step. I used r38 fiberglass bats and it has worked great. I noticed a big difference on my heating bill. Sometimes you can get gift cards if you buy a bunch of it at Lowes. The plus is that you can easily move it out of the way if you need to do some wiring/repairs (important if you have an old home with "character").

Ivy is no good in the PNW. We actually have volunteer groups that pull the stuff out here in Portland. I planted a coral bark Japanese Maple that was great. You may also want to check out a hydrangea. There are some nice rhodies that have a tree-like growth pattern (not a dense bush).

Loved the knotty pine. Unless you spend big money for custom, the newer kitchen cabinets these days are not very good.

I can't imagine this company staying in business much longer anyway. Their stock was delisted and is now trading at .21/share. Unless lots of people decide to drop cash on fancy furniture, they are done. Their ability to raise capital is hurtin'.

I've been in that home in the first 2 photos before it was finished. It looks great. It's in Portland, where I see lots of garage doors worked into designs in homes and commercial space. The home probably isn't very efficient to begin with due to the high ceilings, but the light the thing lets in, especially in the winter, is hard to put a price on.

It's actually pretty easy to mount a TV and run the cables through the wall. I did this last week in a couple hours. The total cost for the mount and wall plates (to make the holes for the cables looks clean) was $100. I'm not sure why you would even fool with this.

Give Rejuvenation a call. Many of the photos in the catalog are from home here in Portland (where they are based). 503-238-1900. They have a resource sheet for things they don't carry.

Ah chickens, my friend has a couple Rhode Island Reds in the backyard. Currently those ladies are producing 2 eggs each per day. Pretty impressive. You really need room for them to graze, and they will eat up all your new growth in the yard (don't let them into the garden). There is a chicken coop tour here in Portland, check it out!

I think this is a great idea. It would be tough to compare it to a "regular" home because of all of the variables, though. With oil prices well over $100 a barrel, people are interested in how much their utility bills are going to be. The group of homebuyers that hejiranyc is referring to can no longer get a loan. Huge areas of the country have been blackballed by mortgage insurance companies.

Here is a little more vintage bathroom excitement for ya. These guys do remodeling in Portland, and have some photos of their work. Lots of tile work. Enjoy.

What a great idea. I'm sure your neighbors will be thrilled with the cockroaches this attracts (and mice, which are carriers for hantavirus). Volunteer at the local recycling center if you really want to be productive.

I've had the DWR sono for nearly 3 years. I would rate it as the best home purchase I've made. I see they have upgraded the covering on it now and have a couple different levels of softness. All good things.

One thing that is interesting about their business model is that they ship everything because shipping is a source of income for them. You get a break on the shipping if you have a credit card account from them (high interest offsets the discount), but otherwise you would be better off sourcing something locally or from a place that has a flat rate shipping fee such as room and board. I've noticed their prices have increased significantly sine I purchased stuff from them. The LC4 chaise has actually doubled in price from when I purchased it (gulp!).

Make sure to stop by the Kennedy School for a dip in the soaking pool ($5) after you bike to the homes on the build it green tour (tickets are cheaper if you ditch the car). Another interesting place to stay would be the Ace Hotel, with Stumptown coffee downstairs and Clyde Commons next door. Walk across the street to Powells Books and spend an hour (or two). Check out Cooper Mountain wine, an organic and biodynamic winery. Oh, I could go on and on....

I've lived with a beige Bantam for the past 3 years. I understand your plight well. I've had luck with simple dish soap on a clean piece of cloth. I've only used it on the side corners, where my neighbor's cat rubs up against, so I'm unsure if there was any discoloration. Using it on the cushion may has different results.
