AT, have you gone mad? There's nothing cool about Barnstars. And I agree, Texas totally needs a barnstar intervention. I see them across the street on the neighbor's house and then I get to be surrounded by them at my job, (I work for the state of Texas). They're in the cafe, the bathroom and the break room. Enough! I would leave the wood paneling along and paint the fireplace white or off white first and see how that changed the room. More modern furniture with some accent colors would look great. If the room is still too dark, just paint one wall of the wood paneling, like the one with the doorway in the top picture. Wood paneling can be wonderful. I am fortunate to own the complete set of the "Practical Encyclopedia of Good Decorating and Home Improvement" (found in a thrift store) and it's interesting reading! When we sold out house and had money for the first time in our lives we purchased an Angela Adams rug for our new nouse. It looks great but I have to say it hasn't held up well. It has a lot of burrs and pulls. I was disappointed considering how much it cost. It will eventually end up in my son's room. I think you've collected some fabulous furniture pieces--pieces that will go the distance. I get the part about not painting the walls, but this home really needs some color. Try punching it up with some more vibrant throw pillows here and there. Some graphic poster art with great colors wouldn't cost too much. And maybe taking away one of the nightstands by the bed would free up the space, it is kind of cluttered. I love the sparkly countertops! You go! And do ignore those early mean comments obviously posted by folks who didn't take their meds this morning. It's hard to control things like air conditioners and space heaters when you're renting. I only stumbled upon this website recently and really enjoy it but found I have noticed that some of the comments have been somewhat mean-spirited. I thought it might just be me, as I am from Texas and we take care to "be sweet." The closest we usually come to a full on diss is when we say "bless his heart." I like what was said about the mission of HELPING people make their homes more beautiful. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I recently purchased a 1960s ranch with popcorn glitter ceilings, wood paneling and carpet everywhere. Lord knows I need tough love. But I'd prefer it be dispensed with a little sugar on the side.
