This advertisment for Alaska salmon (disguised as an 'opinion' piece) omits a lot of important information.

Most importantly, to say that Alaska salmon 'is closely managed and maintained' is a bit misleading. Over 40% (60 million out of 140 million) of the salmon catch in 2008 were hatchery raised, net-pen reared. Over 1.5 billion salmon are man-made and released into the ocean basin to compete for food with wild salmon - called salmon ranching. Just because the state produces billions of extra salmon for the ocean, doesn't mean you are 'closely managing' wild stocks. If Oregon and California are shut down due, in part, to loss of diversity, how do you think this mass overload of salmon in Alaska might affect things?

There is a lot of information about salmon culture on the coast (farming, enhancing, ranching). Don't be sucked in by reports like this one that are just a way of gaining free advertising.
