I feel your pain. But take heart! It's only paint! ;) Have a painting party when you start to take some of the angst away.

If you look at the white trim around the window, it gives you an idea of how bright the colour would be near white cupboards. I agree that it would be better with another colour. I like some of the darker cabinet colours that I have seen lately. Would one of those work?

As for paint, one of my rooms had a red glaze mixture on the walls and it didn't do much to make it any lighter. The texture was different, but that was all. When I painted over it, I primed the room first and then added the new colour. I hadn't thought of tinted primer, but that would have been even better. The new colour looks great!

I agree that paint samples would be a good way to go. Benjamin Moore has a great colour selection and sample paint pots galore! It may be a bit pricier, but it's what I have used and I love it!

Courage! I'm sure you'll pick the right colour!

Can we all agree that it is better to paint an heirloom than to have it end up in the garbage, un-used in the back of a store somewhere or in a landfill?

I admire all of the work you put into these pieces Lindsay! Beautiful results! I hope my next restauration projects will look that well done. And I'm glad you went with a colour you love. Had it been white, red, black or brown, the amount of you work you did is still outstanding!

Hey Tran,

I love all the windows!

I'm just learning about decorating myself, so I don't have a ton of ideas for you. I think that white curtains will only look sterile if you have white curtains, walls, ceilings, floors and furniture. If you can add colour with accent pieces that you like, the curtains will be a great background, and not a sterilizing agent.

My mum just swapped her coloured curtains for white, and the light in the room is much better. It also is less of a distraction than the coloured curtains that she had.

I have seen TVs mounted above fireplaces before and some of them work really well. You'll have to make sure that the height is just right, so that you aren't straining your necks by looking up, and that the heat from the fireplace won't affect the TV. It would free up lots of space for you if you could have some floating shelves for the dvd player, etc as well....not sure where. Sorry.

Oh and I love the idea Daily Decorator had about moving the loveseat to where the armchair is right now. It looks like it would fit well there, and it would free up tons of space visually.

Have fun!

Btw, is the red chair in the first picture a La-Z-Boy recliner? I saw one like that a few months ago that was VERY comfy.

I've been struggling with what to do with my own living room. Thanks for the great ideas! I think I WILL try my sofa on a different angle.

I think you have the right idea about the seating area under the window. I am envisionning a lovely "built-in" window seat that still gives you great storage. But one thing at a time, right?

Great decision about moving the TV too. I've done that in my living room and it almost seems as though the TV doesn't take up as much space as before, just from changing the angle and the furniture it sits on.

Bravo!

PS. Forgive my ignorance, but where could I look for a new piece of canvas? Would I have to cut/sew it to fit? Or can you actually find pre-sewn pieces that might work?

Thanks for the advice! I detached the canvas, as you all advised. It's actually strung as a whole. The nylon goes through the chair piece, into the canvas, back through the chair and up to the next hole on the chair.....

Eklektra---I have no idea who made the chair. There isn't a label or anything.

The chair has been sanded, stained and lacquered....and now it seems the canvas has shrunk since I washed it by hand! So I'll be looking for a new cord or canvas ANYWAY in order to make up for it.
