I moved cross country last year. I think the total weight from our 1 bedroom ended up being something crazy like 6000 pounds. Books contributed to a lot of that. Not that it will be perfectly accurate, but if you have a mover come do a (free) consultation, they will probably take an inventory of your place and give you a weight estimate with their quote.

I did this using a thick unbleached cotton twine can attest that it both looks great AND kind of took forever (about an hour to do a 9 foot cord).

Another vote for taking cuttings and rehoming your plants locally. You could try shipping them, but it might be prohibitively expensive. I would not try to trick the moving company into doing it for you. First, if they found out and you have any damaged items you want reimbursement for... you might have voided your contract / insurance eligibility.

Second, as someone who just last summer did a similar cross-country move (only to SF instead of from), it can take a really long time to get your stuff. Despite the one-week delivery they promised me, summer is the moving industry's peak and I didn't get reunited with any of my things for 5 weeks. Moving sucks. Save yourself stress where you can.

It's usually a lot more effective to hold or mount the lens/camera facing down before trying to remove dust so that gravity can assist rather than fight with you.

i always think it's funny when places like this are posted and the invariable flood of "that would drive me crazy!" or "oh my god, the dusting!" comments come in, because i look at these pictures and think, "yep, that's about right."

i mostly agree with the "don't like it? just move along." sentiment—a blog post about this house (or any house) is not worth stressing over.

BUT. to suggest that this house is anything but really, really huge is absurd. i was super amused to read the comment downplaying that by suggesting that 1300 sqft of the house could essentially be said to belong to the dogs.

This is ridiculous.

It's not the idea that paper towels are the worst conceivable sin against the planet that has garnered these reactions by the sustainability-aware. It's the flippant and condescending way the article (not to mention many of the comments..) is written and the non-facts used as the defense.

If the original poster wants to use paper towels- fine! If the original poster wants to be validated in that use and pretend there's really no alternative and no harm caused, then she'd better put her head back in the sand where it's safe.

Being more environmentally conscious is about little choices and incremental shifts, not about being perfect. That said, lying to yourself is unhelpful, and using your wounded ego as an excuse not to aim a little higher is just lame.
