I eliminated cable, use Roku with Netflix, Hulu plus and Aereo (for broadcast TV in NYC). I also have Amazon Prime. But I use Verizon for internet and they won't provide service unless you have a landline. So I'm paying $75 a month for internet and a landline that's rarely used.

I have a tote bag hanging on the kitchen doorknob. I don't wash kitchen laundry with any other items (in case of grease stains) so it's easy to keep separate and the bag is washable too.

After having a few dinner parties, I've realized that I have friends that are wonderful to host and appreciate any and all my efforts. Then there are the others that don't. Those are the ones I will meet up with in restaurants. I enjoy their company without having to pay for their dinner and washing the dishes.

I skipped the vinegar spray and gess I didn't wipe down well. When the residual baking soda got hot from using the oven, it smelled horrible. Make sure all the baking soda is rinsed off!

@mayacb - I wouldn't try the washing soda - if not rinsed off properly it could only be worse than the baking soda.

I live in NYC - I don't have adjacent neighbors or bugs so the list should end there, but I also have five closets and some sunlight!

I don't think it's ugly at all. But I agree with the others: get rid of the white gable, a color to match the stone would be better (I'm thinking grey); the shutters need to be wider; an maybe a different color for the door. Start small and other ideas will come to you.

I agree with @littleinky. I always travel with a bottle and keep one out for guests. I call them "toilet eyedrops" as the bottle has warnings not to use it for your eyes. It may seem pricey, but a bottle does last a long time.

@DCMandy - this is not a spray. It's a squeeze bottle and you just use one drop.

I've been looking for a jelly cabinet too as I have a narrow space in my kitchen and I want a shallow cabinet along the wall. Hearth and Plow have ones with an antique look.

Why not reverse your plan and leave the gap at the top and fill with large pillows and stuffed toys? I'm thinking a sleeping child would move around and slide down towards the bottom of a bed rather than move to the top.

One of the only things I don't have in the kitchen is the KA mixer. I bake and my heavy duty KA hand mixer has gotten me through everything so far. I use my micro every day - even for warming leftovers, I think it's worth it.

Usually a sleeve is sewn to the back of the quilt so a curtain rod or dowel can be used to hang the quilt. I have an old quilt I'd like to hang and have been thinking of basting it to a fabric backing with a sleeve so the quilt won't be stressed or damaged.

The easiest thing would be to install a microwave/hood or a non-venting hood (there are converter kits available) and then fill the gaps with trim to the bottom of the vent. This could tide you over until you decide what you want to do for a permanent fix or reno. I think it's best to live with a kitchen for a while so you can figure out what works and what doesn't.

I must have sent back 3 or 4 sets trying to find a good, basic, normal-sized set and ended up with Gorham Studio. All the newer sets have ginormus forks and knives and are not made of 18/10 stainless, so the tines bend. With sales and coupons, I bought a set of 14 and the hostess pieces because I'm afraid I'll never find something I like again.
