One note I forgot to add to the post:

The bed is actually turned 90 degrees to the left from the "before" picture -- we also re-arranged the space. So the headboard actually isn't covering a window, just a blank wall.

Considering it has taken me up to 8 hours to put together a piece of (pre-designed, pre-cut) IKEA furniture, I think 30 hours sounds reasonable for designing and building a bench, especially for a first-time DIY-er without a great deal of building knowledge.

Doing anything right takes time, and almost every significant DIY (or professional for that matter) project I've taken on in my house has taken at least twice as long as I normally thought it would.

Repurposing Sentimental Fabrics
1/26/11 1:38 PM

Thanks for the comments!

I got rid of a LOT, but most of it was boxes and papers that were wasting space. It all really just needed to be sorted in a way that made sense. And some things did get moved to other parts of the room.

It remains to be seen whether the fabric placement will work or not -- I don't use it as often as other things, so for now it makes sense, but if it starts to drive me crazy I'll rethink it (my new mantra). I do plan to eventually get a larger shelf that fits the closet better, but for now I re-purposed what I had.

The $1,055 rents are for unrestricted units, meaning people who make OVER the income cap. Applicants under the income cap pay less.

YES! The "slipcover" is temporary -- just a piece of fabric thrown on the chair really. The chair is super-comfortable, but pretty ugly ... another struggle in the space that will probably go the way of our other pieces.

The art actually isn't hung very high, the ceilings are very low!

From what I understand, most auto shipping companies won't guarantee a shipping date. They will give you a window which may or may not be accurate because they are basically just brokers, booking spots on trucks that are owned by another company and those spots can be very limited. If you HAVE to ship your car, definitely do your research because this isn't always made clear at the outset.

It's better to use a company that doesn't require a deposit because then you have more flexibility -- you won't lose your deposit if a spot comes up from another shipper.

If someone has had a great experience with an auto shipper, by all means, tell us about it!

If you can afford it, yes use a moving company, but we saved $5,000 doing it ourselves with ABF which, at least to us, was worth it.

As for the car shipping, there are companies that let you reserve months in advance without a deposit and are perfectly reputable. We booked in advance and left a $200 deposit with a company who then couldn't find a spot for our car for a month AFTER the date we requested shipping, but we were locked in to them because they would not return the deposit for 30 days. Just be sure to read reviews and testimonials of the car shipping companies before you book anything.

The cord situation is still being figured out, but we're working on it ... most likely we will just use some kind of paintable cord cover like Wiremold. They are unplugged for the photo!

The height isn't an issue, it's fairly low and I use it for working out quite a bit so I prefer it a bit higher.

And yes, the room is only a TV room/play room, our living room is upstairs.

Yes! By all means keep your fancy camera by your side if you are up for it, only leave it behind and take an inexpensive substitute when the situation (or your mood) warrants.
