pick something funky (that's of the right size) up at a market or yard sale and spray paint it a neon color, something like an old telephone, statue, pitcher, retro toys or so on. Or even better, find something you love, but don't like to have on display for some reason, - spray paint it neon pink and display.

if the roughness of the shelf is too bad just sand it down a bit, even it out with spackle and paint over it.

leave it empty.

I've got a triple ikea stockholm bookshelf unit in my flat and I keep the bottom shelf, top shelf and top empty to frame everything in and make sure everything looks neat and not cluttered.

In my opinion one should always try to avoid putting stuff on top of high storage units, whether they are kitchen cabinets, wardrobes or bookshelves.

The bed is rather nice in my opinion, I think you should get a chandelier above it. Also lose the lights above the bedside tables/drawers and get some table lamps.

I think it would look very good if you keep everything in varying shades of white but with very different textures, so you could get very thin white see-through curtains (blinds under) and a couple large cable knit wool-look pillows.

Lovely furniture, especially the drinks cart and the birds above the fireplace.

Also, I like vertical blinds :-)

Great redo in my opinion. I personally like the two tone backsplash.

I agree with what some others have said, great prioritizing and good call to spend time on the ceiling. I realize that the pictures may not accurately portray what the room looks like on a day-to-day basis but I agree that a few details would help tie it together more. I would suggest a wooden square large chopping board (an orangish tone) and a black rectangular floor mat perhaps.

Congrats and enjoy :-)

such a narrow hall is really hard to work with and those frames and the light coming in sideways in the ceiling really work together in my opinion.... love this flat

With the exception of the plaid couches and diagonal lines on the walls next to the fireplace I like the before picture more

thats a beautiful wall but seems rather difficult...

My first idea was to paint the whole white 'unit' (shelves and fireplace - basically just the bottom half of the wall) a very dark gray color, that way the tv will look more seamless. I would also try to remove some (about half) of those pictures, put them somewhere else in the house.

Maybe it's just me but I don't think that round mirror goes well over the fireplace. I would try something square - maybe you could put those pictures there in a neat box shaped collage.

dont paint the walls, it will be too much. Get new cushions a new vase etc. but leave it at that. You don't want the room to compete with the chair

My idea: First loose the striped chair and the brown curtains. Then place the two tan/brown sofas across from each other with the coffee table in the middle and the fireplace at the end.

Then I'd either put the tv up on the wall next to the fireplace, I'd put those speakers as far from each other as possible (perhaps in the corners where the corner windowsa are) Then I'd get a smaller white wall cabinet under the tv and put this one behind one of the sofas (in the less noticeble space) to keep clutter.

Thats a beatiful bright nice space... good luck

I've got a couple of the fixtures in the first picture, they actually look even better with smaller bulbs - E14. They're called pistilliono.

Looks great!!
I'v'e actually been thinking of doing that to cover my clothes in the bedroom.

I hope what I'm about to say won't spoil your joy but I was worried that the curtains would wear and become dirty since one would always touch them in a similar place to open/close..

Did you think about this? Do you think it is a real issue or something that I don't have to think about..

I don't welcome smoking in my flat but my back yard has a bench, table and an ashtray. I certainly hope that makes smoking friends feel welcome, because if they weren't welcome I wouldn't invite them over in the first place.

Some of Jussola's points are good, smoking is only the tip of the iceberg and smokers dont deserve all the crap they get (although some of them are rude, definately not all)

You could probably get a similar ring at a hardware store or at a jewlelry store, maybe a thick bangle bracelet.

How about the Panton chairs by Verner Panton (From Vitra), not slim line but easy to clean and they would look so good with the antique table. Here's a great example of a similar combo.

If you think white is too miami vice how about black or some trendy color like mustard yellow (if they make them in that color)?

I only keep books that I think I'll read again someday. It is my only concession to "clutter". We have a whole wall of book shelves in our otherwise minimal apartment.

I almost made an impulse buy too, but after reading some of the comments I changed my mind.

Is it just me or is all this one color, texture thing coming back. I love how in the second room pictured there are all these different textures of white fabric..
