We mix the detergent with water in a spray bottle to spray down the dishes. Then (because we're in Sweden and Swedes generally don't use sponges) we use a plastic bristle scrub brush to, well, scrub. FYI, Massachusetts residents have access to significantly subsidized compost bins. There's lots of information on the mass.gov site if you go digging for it, I don't have to do so at the moment. Basically, call your local DPW and ask if they have any available and how much they are. If they don't have any, call a nearby town, they might still have some. I'll tell you what I did. I went to TJ Max and made a b-line to the clearance section. Picked up 20 cloth napkins for under $3. I use them whenever I have a party and whenever I feel compelled to use a real napkin. They take up little space and cost very little. It just makes sense.
