I would definitely get the landlord involved. After all it's really his/her problem not yours. They can do several things to add more sound insulation to the ceiling in the lower apartment. The other thing you may do, and I did this with my neighbor downstairs is invite them to hear things in your apartment, like the tv or stereo, so that they can see that you are living your everyday life and not in a loud way. If they are reasonable people (though it sounds like they aren't) then they will understand. Tell them nicely that it's not either of your faults for the sound transmission and that they need to take it up with the landlord.
If they are completely unreasonable, as it would seem, then respond to any text for a short while saying please refer any further complaints to the landlord and then stop responding altogether. If they don't stop sending you nasty texts, that constitutes harassment and you could actually take it up Legally if you want to go that far. Also I would forward any text you get to the landlord so they can see first hand what you have to deal with.

I would suggest doing panel curtains, they are flow profile and don't gather like curtains can disappear easily and won't be a bunching hazard. Ikea has lots. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/living_room/10702/

Quick and dirty:
1) Replace vanity cabinet and ctop or paint them. Yes you can paint a counter top in extreme desperation.
3) Painting the floor tile is an option. But not recommended and the blue is kind of funky.
2) You can mirror the whole sink wall, or leave space at top and bottom to do accentuate the linearness (yes I made that word up). Leaving tile at the bottom will save you a whole lot of cleaning. I would do it on top of the tile, taking it off will be a nightmare off. OR leave some tile visible at top and bottom.
3) If you can't afford to tile the floor get some good rugs. Again painting in last resort, is an option but the floor doesn't look too bad.
4)Definitely lose the glass doors, if you can't replace up, curtain it up.
5) Obviously lose the palm trees.
6) Paint the molding around the window white.

I'll have to dig up the pic, I found one of those sitz baths in Buenos Aires. I had never seen one before, I wanted to put some cushions in it and make it a chair, 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' style :)

Definitely the sewing machine table. Though the machines are (not always) often obsolete. The cast iron legs make for a great side table, i have even used it as a vanity, put a stone counter on it. drop a sink in, or place a vessel. It's perfect. One of my fave recycled items :)

I bought 2 orange Overman chairs from a junk shop for $40. An antiques dealer came in after me (had to go home and empty car to pick them up) and offered $200 a piece. I have seen them on auction sites for $800 and up. they are may favorit pieces. They look like this, http://www.flickr.com/photos/momoderne/2947519299/

My room is just about as big as yours. I just bought this light by Tord Boontje from zwello
http://www.zwello.com/pendants.html. I am going to cut the wire and hang it hardwired as a chandelier, but it comes with a plug in cord with the dial swithc on the cord. Any light of that nature that you can hang, but that plugs in would work I think. Good luck :)
