General question about countertop compost pails: I've seen ones that advertise airflow to avoid odors. That seems counterintuitive to me because then the smell can get out. Do those airflow bins work, or should I look for ones without holes?

The Biobag on the counter is wearing out its welcome :)

Brilliant! This is the solution to sleeping in the same bed with my radiator of a sleeping partner.

Patrick,

I'm aware that there are people older and richer than myself, and that there must be people out there that spend way more than $900 on a desk. I just object to labeling that "totally accessible." $900 is a breathtakingly ludicrous amount to spend on a desk for every person I know under the age of 40. $300 would be pushing it for most of us.

My original comment was more a frustration with the direction this now-conglomerate is headed, and a desire for the editors to reread their own book and mission statement from time to time. A snippet: "Creating this home doesn’t require large amounts of money or space...The basic elements of good home design can be learned and achieved by all." The proportion of that sort of post has been shrinking over the last few years.

I'm pretty low-maintenance about it. I have a little file folder that came premarked with the months. I just stick the receipt in the month's section. When I cycle around and get back to a month a year later, I flip through to make sure there's nothing I need to keep and then I toss the stack.

Organized in the rare instance I need to go back to refer to something, but extremely low time requirement.

Oh, and the BioBrite is a little cheaper. Still a commitment, but if you have to get up as early as I do it's worth every penny.

I have the BioBrite clock, which basically does this same function, except it also has the beep. My first apartment out of college's bedroom was painted dark red (not my decision) and had only one window that faced north and was shaded by a tree. Getting up before the sun rose in that room was incredibly soul-rending. The alarm clock was an incredible help at making me not hate the world.

But I have one with a beep function too. There is no way twittering birds would wake me even with the light. I sleep like a brick.

In what universe is $900 "totally accessible"??

People, this is Apartment Therapy. Not Mansion Therapy.

I'm a little puzzled by this one. I wouldn't really call it a "soup" although it was tasty. Also, I found the cider vinegar flavor jarring and overpowering. I'm not sure I understand how it fits with the other ingredients. I would also recommend more like 3 pieces of bacon, since you can barely taste 1.

Three recipe clarifications: Is this fresh ginger or powdered? Also, I think you forgot to mention when to put the bacon back in. All the boiling and simmering should probably happen with the lid on.

Wow...this was completely delicious! I was really worried when I tasted it after 4 hours, and then I realized I had forgotten the coconut milk and spinach. With those added it was a completely different dish. It did need 5 hours on high to cook the potatoes, so make sure you cook them enough in the first step. SO GOOD over Israeli Couscous or rice, and so vegetably and healthy. Yum.

What is the benefit to towel loops? Saving space? I get that you can then use pegs instead of towel bars, but does that provide better drying? I used to hang my towels from a hook and found that parts of it took about a day to dry-- bars seem to do a better job.

Huh, there must be two. I saw a disco ball in someone's corner window doing the same thing. I think it was 22&Treat, but I could be wrong.

Try out the free version, but don't give this company any money. For two reasons:

1) they won't send you the code, then will ignore four emails until you threaten to dispute the charge, then they will promise you a quick refund, and then ignore you some more. In other words, this appears to be a SCAM.

2) there is a free Firefox extension that does exactly the same thing, but faster. and FREE. Oh yeah, and it's free. It runs on Greasemonkey.

How did you get the table to be white? I have the same one and it's metal and terrible wood veneer that's clearly not weather-proof. I'd love to be able to use my table outside.

YOWZA. I have the same table and two chairs! I had them out on my covered porch for the last two years and the fake wood paper is bubbling from what little snow settled on them. I now want to put them out in my (uncovered) backyard-- how did you do the weatherproofing/painting them white?

I'm moving a one-bedroom from east coast to west coast. Renting a truck cost the same as you-pack-we-move movers, but you need to factor in the $1000 of gas it costs to get that truck across the country. Movers it is.
