I love Fab.com but be careful buying holidays presents because it often takes 3+ weeks to get things from the site. I am still waiting on a t-shirt and litho print I orderd (for myself, so no biggie) almost a month ago.

This reminds me of David and Keith's apartment on Six Feet Under but with NYC proportions. It is masculine but in a subtle way and very classy.

This happened to me recently. Did it curdle or just break? (Meaning it didn't properly emulsify.) I think mine just didn't emulsify, so I mixed it with sour cream and used it to dress potato salad. It was delish.

I think maybe making mayo with olive oil (technically aioli) is maybe harder because the oil is heavier than, say, vegetable oil. This is based on nothing but my own intuition, though...

In college, I had a yam that I forgot about and it sprouted. I planted it and named him "Yammy Davis, Jr." It was actually a beautiful plant!

Why would a tree be a dust magnet? Who dusts the leaves of their plants? I have a rubber plant that I've had for years and I've never, ever dusted its big, flat leaves and they aren't dusty at all. Fake plants get dusty, not real ones.

I don't understand how vegetarian or vegan parents raising their children to eat the same way is any different that an omnivore parent raising their children eating meat and dairy.

Why is it okay for one set of parents to prepare for their children the food they also want to eat but not others? Pretty much all kids have very little control over what goes onto the dinner table. The ultimate control always lies with parents.

The children who really suffer are the ones whose parents consistently make unhealthy decision like fast food everyday, not the ones who restrict their children to healthy foods only.

I just made a red lentil, coconut milk and thai yellow curry dish that could easily have been thinned into a soup (I served it over rice). All you're really looking for is gluten-free vegan food because all vegan food is lactose free.

Here's the recipe I spun off of (with some variation):

I think it's really weird that the metals/minerals that have to be mined in making computers. Not to mention that most of those resources are mined in politically unstable countries that exploit workers and natural resources in the process.

I just ate some cold tortilla soup for lunch and it was great! I used dried chile negras in the soup, so it had a lot of deep, smokey flavor that was really yummy cold.

I think there are people who are frightened and threatened by having to face the reality of changing food supply and the need for localized action because their understanding of it is limited. They are afraid it will mean food will be more expensive (which is probably true on one level) and they won't be able to eat the way they are accustomed to--with lots of subsidized, cheap animal products.

I'm not defending these people, what they did is horrible and cowardly, but I think we need to realize that not everyone is on-board yet when it comes to radical change in food production. There are plenty of people in this country who are happy to eat processed foods made by corporations who have no regard for their well-being or safety. It's sad but true and when they see a line drawn in the sand that says "That food is bad but keeping bees in your backyard is good" they react out of fear and lack of understanding.

Still, a real shame and I feel so sad for the farmers.

How can this be considered raw if it is made from dates? Aren't dates dried figs? I didn't think things that were dried could be considered "raw."

Not trying to hate, this sounds delicious, I'm just questioning its "raw" title.

Um, I don't think anyone ever thought the 5 Second Rule had been proven by science. Of course things can stick to food instantly; the idea was sort of more "life happens and sometimes you drop stuff" than lab-based fact.

However, I agree that it's about common sense. Would I pick some blades of grass off of something and still eat it? Hell yes. Would I eat something that fell in mud? Nope.

I really love Quorn, which is soy-free and made from mushroom protein. I recently became vegan and resisting the temptation to eat a lot of soy foods is difficult. Quorn is chewy like chicken and great in stir fries and sandwiches. It's a little spendy so stock up if you see it on sale!

Avgolemono soup! The perfect soup for fighting off a cold. My boyfriend thinks it's gross, so it may be kind of an acquired taste but I think it's delightful and even better the next day.

I made this last night and it was great! I want to address all the posts wondering if this was "heavy": It was hearty, but not heavy. I served it in a reasonable portion with a simple salad with fennel, orange and avocado. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it!

I would also stress that the polenta does need to cook for at least 45 minutes. Watching it progress was fascinating. It started out looking like about 10 servings but then cooked down and sort of "fell" when I added the butter at the end. It was so good!

Full disclosure: I used navy beans. I couldn't find borlotti beans and (honestly) probably can't afford them. It was still awesome. I cooked the navy beans with fennel fronds to continue the meal's theme.

I am a fairly organized person (my live-in boyfriend might say more like "anal retentive") and I find my junk drawer totally liberating. The other day I cleaned some stuff out of it (match books without matches, broken pens, etc.) and momentarily considered getting an in-drawer organizer for it. Then I thought "Screw it!" I like having one place in the house that I feel no need to keep clean. I know, more or less, what's in there and I can find it if I need it.

Ugh. I hate the idea that every baby needs to have an "original" name these days. Your name doesn't make you interesting, it just indicates that your parents are dorks.

I saw a kid named "Kutter" on TV the other day. This simultaneously made me think of 1. The band Korn 2. People who cut themselves 3. The brand of bug spray. John is a name. Kutter is a bunch of letters put together. And if the whole intention is to have a name no one else has then the logic of "Oh, well all names had to start some where" doesn't follow.

I feel like these parents don't understand that some day these kids will be adults with jobs and business cards and will have to do things like meet their boyfriend or girlfriend's parents for the first time. And when they have to say "Hi, I'm Petunia" they're going to have to explain that name over and over and it is always going to precede them. It actually detracts from your personality and could be totally incongruous with it.

Unless, of course, you are named Kutter and smell like bug spray.

I am so much more charmed by homes like this than the West Village place that was recently featured. Anyone with tons of money can hire a decorator, point to some stuff in a catalog and, poof, furnish a house. But this place feels creative and like it came together over time, piece by piece, fun find by find, and that is real style!

So cute! I'm always impressed when people can decorate in a way that is fun and girly without being precious or frilly. That house just looks loved and lovely.

PS--I want that floral bedspread! Is that from Anthropologie?
