I love everything about this renovation! Beautiful, right down to the furnishings. I want to see more - especially that room off the kitchen that shows dark walls and gold window treatments.

Before & After: A 100-Year-Old Farmhouse Freshens Up The Sweeten

I just painted my smallish living room (13x13) BM - Iron Mountain in an eggshell finish. It's a warm charcoal that reads black but a little softer. I have linen white on the bottom 1/2 wainscoting so it breaks it a little but I LOVE it. Everyone thought I was crazy too when I said I wanted to paint it black and now the same people love it and think it's magazine-worthy. Go for it! I wish I could post a picture here to show you. Before it was that pinkish brown that was so popular 10 yrs ago, and I was thrilled to see that go.

I loved this house tour when it was posted, so I was thrilled at the sight of the entryway again. This NYC apartment makes me happy just to look at it.

White/Cream walls everywhere and lots of gold - picture frames, gilded mirror frames, etc. Very glam, warm, pretty.

Great post - some of these comments are hilarious!

Tiffany blue and Cherry red was my nursery choice since I didn't know boy or girl. Had 2 girls. They loved it. I turned it into a guest room with a black twin spindle bed with a trundle, cherry red sheet and a quilt. People love to staying in there.

Get Maria Killiam of colourmehappy.blogspot.com in on this. It's all about the undertones, and you're working with pink undertone. I would vote for Antique White from BM in eggshell (for a little sheen). It's a cream neutral with a nice pinkish undertone (though not pink). Email Maria!

Every New Year's Day I make a list of what I will organize that year. I try to tackle the list by June 1 so it doesn't drag on.

I start with closets and files drawers, then do a few smaller junk drawers, or my purse, then ramp up to biggger rooms like the garage or the playroom (which = nightmare since that one entails me on all fours looking for missing puzzle and games pieces) and I find that system works well.

I usually do these on a weekend where we have no social commitments with music on and a glass of wine that follows me around and I just keep at it until the task is complete. I keep a list taped up in my kitchen the whole time and cross off as I accomplish so that keeps me going as a daily reminder.

It generally takes my family about 6 months to totally unwind and disorganize everything I did and then I start all over again the next January:)

Janice from Ikea - is the blue sofa an outdoor item? Or just indoor? Also - do you have any indoor/outdoor rugs coming?

I should add: I didn't have to pay for the equipment -- it was sent free and I just pay the $34.99 a month.

Before living here, I had to buy the equipment, have an installer drill into my walls (which my landlords wouldn't let me do when I rented) and pay a higher monthly monitoring.

So this one is good for renters and owners.

Going On Vacation? How to Make Everyone Think You're Still Home

My newly purchased apartment was burglarized on my 2nd day living there. I had a rotating set of friends lined up to take turns staying with me - bc it was so traumatic. And I don't own anything of value so that point is moot. I got a burglar alarm and felt much better after that (real or perceived).

But actually, I just got a new alarm that AT users might appreciate bc it's a wireless DIY system, and less than 1/2 $ of what I was paying for ADT (which I had used since the yr 2000 burglary) and the technology is awesome for people who go for that sort of thing.

And if you move a lot like I have, this is great bc you can take it with you go and just set it up at the next place.

I love this home! We are redoing a 1913 home that is rumored to be a Sears home. You have given me great inspiration.

Can you share the dark paint color in the dining room?

Funny you loathe your dining room table and chairs. I lingered on that pic and was loving them - with the buffet. Looks fantastic. Maybe you can get a furniture person to come and fix them so the squeaks are gone and they are sturdy once again. Visually, they look fantastic.

Love it! So well done. Chevron fan here too!

Can I ask where you got the window hardware? I need a curtain rod like that to run straight into the wall. I have a triple set of windows in a small bedroom where the right window runs right into the perpendicular wall.

I thought Grandmom's comment was hilarious. Don't be so literal people!

One tip on visiting started by my husband's family who would descend on us each Thanksgiving: I ask ahead what our sleeping/bed situation will be, and bring my own sheets and towels so I don't burden my host with added laundry when I leave. That's my least favorite part of guests - making up the bed and washing their dirty, wet towels after they leave. The host always says "you don't have to do that!" but I know they secretly love it because I did when my in-laws extended that courtesy to me. (It's more difficult if you're flying somewhere I realize...)

From the little bit I can see, your home looks lovely! A home is a constant evolution. I agree that estimates put everything into perspective. Once you get a few, you can solidify the plan and have a goal to save $ toward.

I agree with SherryBinNH said - and have noticed the same with young people and jobs. They don't want to work their way up. When selling my condo in 2005 (that was new construction in 2000 and in perfect condition) a young girl in her early 20s was fixated on the fact that I had white kitchen cabinets and white appliances. Why not wood and granite and stainless steel? Then she'd put in low-ball offers that were insulting. I basically told her to stop bidding because I didn't want to sell to her.

There is an entitlement that no one my age had back then (I'm now in my 40s). Working your way up builds character - and that goes for your professional life as well as your home.
