Why couldn't this just have been an article about cool toasters? Why make gluten free/Celiac an issue at all if this about the devices?

Shiner Cheer! By the time I'm tired of it, it's out of stores anyhow and I have to wait for the next winter for it to reappear.

When I was in high school, I had to go over to a lady's house who was going to play piano accompaniment for me, to practice.

When I got there, she was vacuuming her cat. It was on a really low setting, and it seemed like the cat really liked it. I was just very surprised.

To each his own, I suppose!

They're Manzanita branches, and they are really cool looking. I think this site sells them- http://www.bloomsandbranches.com/

I saw this on design sponge and ended up getting one as our little landing strip-

I guess they stopped selling it, but it's nice to hang keys and stash the mail up top. I tend to dump everything in there, and sort it later.

Bit of a book burning vibe, but cute in theory.

The colored buttons are very nice though :)

Penguin just came out with a postcard set of their classic covers, if someone wanted to do this without destroying the books (plus penguin covers are cool). It may have even been featured on here before. This is the set on amazon- http://t.co/q2MiGEJ

I always felt like lighting was the quickest way to transform a dorm room. Lighting was so bad in our dorms, just one huge fluorescent in the middle of the ceiling. We hung up fabric on the ceiling to kind of dampen it, and then bought a bunch of lamps to make the ambience more inviting.

If you can't have a traditional rod, can you have a tension rod at least? We all just used tension rods and got cute bright curtains. The whole set up would be pretty inexpensive.

Also, if you can't put anything in the walls (cinderblock? I'm guessing?) what about the ceiling? Can you hang a tapestry or piece of fabric, or christmas lights if you're only putting holes in the ceiling?

As for the furniture, you could always use double sided tape and hang up a bunch of unframed photos or postcards, there have been cute examples on here before.

Best of luck!

I usually make a big batch of stock before I go out of town (Sometimes even as I'm packing). If I don't have chicken I'll just make a veggie stock.
Also fried rice is a great 'use up' stuff recipe. :]

After living with all sorts of people at school, the dishes seems to be the one unifying incendiary event in making people angry with each other, but this is what worked for us-

Assign dish days. You always do monday, wednesday, friday, they always do tuesday, thursday, saturday, whatever. Do ALL of the dishes on that day whether they're yours or not. You might luck out and have 6 dishes or you might not and have 2 sinkfuls, but when you start fresh every day, nothing has a chance to get too horrible, and no one has a chance to get too mad.
If your roommate cooked a 3 course meal on your dish day, you can kindly ask them if you can wash dishes together, and then actually wash them together. You might be in the same situation some other time.

That was the only thing that worked for us. Taking turns (without a deadline) leads to procrastination, assigning days was an easy way to just suck it up and do it.

If someone NEVER COOKS and abhors the idea they should have to split dish duty, ask them what chore they will always do instead. We had someone always take out the trash, for instance.

and Good luck :)

I didn't realize this was even up for debate?
Butter wins <3

I forget if it was Michael Pollan or another food advocate, but somewhere it was mentioned that Americans can't stand the sight of visible fat on their food (a pat of butter over vegetables, a drizzle of oil, etc) where, that's actually healthier than food loaded with fat you can't see.

You must get The Arrival by Shaun Tan. The lack of words is a great device to show an immigrant's arrival in a strange place, not understanding the language but just getting around by what they see.
