Sadly old pianos don't age well like a good violin, but this can salvage an otherwise beautiful old cabinet. I'm still waiting see see one converted into a fold out bed. Though I wish I had room for a real working piano in my apartment.

Very nice but you should consider updating the ceiling lights as well.

They've done a lovely job in my opinion. The one thing that bugs me is that though they screened the ugly water heater with cookbook (?) shelves how do they access the heater if required? Also as a short person I wonder how they access the pots and utensils at the top of the peg board?

It's lovely! But I can't help but notice that the child window guard has been removed in the remodeled room. I'm not sure what the law is, but much as I dislike the look wouldn't that be a violation for the landlord? Aren't they required by law in NYC or are they simply optional?

Benjamin Moore has a paint product called Advance specifically for painting cabinets wood or laminate. I haven't tried it yet. I picked up a brochure because I hope to use it on my kitchen cabinets later in the spring.

The before is exactly the combo of counter top and cabinet color I have in my rental kitchen. My cabinets aren't wood but some kind of faux wood formica with an ornamental grooved pattern in each door and cheap baroque handles. I've changed the handles to something simpler, but it still all looks hideous. I've gotten permission from my landlord to paint them and these results are very encouraging. Will probably go with black lowers and light color upper cabinets.

I guess I'm the odd man out then as blue is my least favorite color, at least for interior decorating. Love yellow which seems sunny and happy to me.

My experience with "dimmable" fluorescent bulbs is that they have a very limited range and short life-span.

Ooh. This is a good topic. Especially when certain members of Congress are trying to rescind the move to more energy efficient bulbs.

My problem with the new bulbs is finding a bulb that can be reliably dimmed without burning out in short order.

Growing up in suburban Minneapolis I remember the front lawns as being a big playground for me and all the neighboring kids to run back and forth in, play in the sprinkler, winter snowmen and all. It wasn't just for show. The back was for quieter pursuits, barbeques and maybe a vegetable garden.

Prefer closed upper & lower, too much clutter otherwise. A small section for display is fine.

My 350 sq ft. studio apt. seemed large enough for a single guy in his late 20's when I moved in over 30 years ago. It was also rent stabilized and frankly my income has not kept pace with the market rents in NYC. I still find it adequate, but it would be better if the layout didn't mean the bed was right in front of the entry door and I'd prefer a building with on premise laundry and basement storage lockers (for things like suitcases and off-season clothes or Xmas decorations).

Another problem/peeve I have with CFL's is that most of them are not dimmable. I've found some that are supposedly dimmable in a very limited range but when used with a dimmer burn out much too quickly.
