Benjamin Moore has a paint product called Advance specifically for painting cabinets wood or laminate. I haven't tried it yet. I picked up a brochure because I hope to use it on my kitchen cabinets later in the spring.

Can I Paint Over Laminate Cabinetry?

The before is exactly the combo of counter top and cabinet color I have in my rental kitchen. My cabinets aren't wood but some kind of faux wood formica with an ornamental grooved pattern in each door and cheap baroque handles. I've changed the handles to something simpler, but it still all looks hideous. I've gotten permission from my landlord to paint them and these results are very encouraging. Will probably go with black lowers and light color upper cabinets.

I guess I'm the odd man out then as blue is my least favorite color, at least for interior decorating. Love yellow which seems sunny and happy to me.

My experience with "dimmable" fluorescent bulbs is that they have a very limited range and short life-span.

Ooh. This is a good topic. Especially when certain members of Congress are trying to rescind the move to more energy efficient bulbs.

My problem with the new bulbs is finding a bulb that can be reliably dimmed without burning out in short order.

Good interview. I've enjoyed her previous shows and it sounds like this one won't disappoint. I've set my DVR in case I'm out.

Growing up in suburban Minneapolis I remember the front lawns as being a big playground for me and all the neighboring kids to run back and forth in, play in the sprinkler, winter snowmen and all. It wasn't just for show. The back was for quieter pursuits, barbeques and maybe a vegetable garden.

Prefer closed upper & lower, too much clutter otherwise. A small section for display is fine.

My 350 sq ft. studio apt. seemed large enough for a single guy in his late 20's when I moved in over 30 years ago. It was also rent stabilized and frankly my income has not kept pace with the market rents in NYC. I still find it adequate, but it would be better if the layout didn't mean the bed was right in front of the entry door and I'd prefer a building with on premise laundry and basement storage lockers (for things like suitcases and off-season clothes or Xmas decorations).

Another problem/peeve I have with CFL's is that most of them are not dimmable. I've found some that are supposedly dimmable in a very limited range but when used with a dimmer burn out much too quickly.

My question is also about the beaded curtain wall. All in all its a stunning home. Floating away like the house from “Up”? Ha! Love it.

If you really can't get permission to remove them maybe just open them up to the full width and put up drapes with a valence that covers the top hardware as well?

I first was introduced to the "storage bed" in my college dorm back in the late 60's. It was a great space saver in a dorm room and now living in a NYC studio I find in useful as well. I use a West Elm storage bed. Stows my sheets and bedding as well as winter sweaters that I'm not using.

Never heard of Feng Shui until a couple of years ago and the concept does not influence me.

Orchid64, That doesn't look like "avocado" to me. I use a saucepan that's the avocado color. Yes, it may date but I'd still prefer it to the 30 year old frost machine I currently have.
