We're planning on cooking a big turkey in preparation for the baby we have coming in a few weeks. Roasting a turkey is easy, bountiful, and the meat freezes great in containers with gravy. Thanksgiving in spring - yay!

This is exactly right! We have a baby coming in 3 weeks, and a few nights each week you'd think that we were hosting a gathering of 20+ people. If you have the big pots, pans, and crock pot to do it, cooking larger quantities isn't much different than cooking a meal for two.

The link for the DIY wool blanket curtain goes to the (very annoying) Better Homes and Gardens site. After much clicking, I couldn't find it. Is there an alternate link?

Wow! Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of the fantastic advice and links - you've made my morning everyone!

Any thoughts on what to do with the massive amount of lean beef that I impulse bought yesterday? I was thinking meatballs for an easy protein add on. Does anyone have a good healthy recipe or other ideas? Thank you!

Probably one of the most mundane design features in the house, but I'd love to know who makes those soap bar holders that are on the wall in the shower.

When I was living in Japan I discovered cooking chopsticks (just longer version than the regular ones...about 18" or so)....they are AWESOME!

As already stated, the produce and meat are generally overpriced.

Our must-make-a-trip-to-Trader-Joes list:

Whole wheat lavash
Arugula and goat cheese good...similar to pasta I've have in Italy.
Cheese....such a nice selection...decent prices
Mediterranean hummus
Whole grain mustard...seriously love this stuff...soooooo delicious
Soy ice cream sandwiches
Frozen falafel

A lot of their pre-made frozen meals are tasty, but WOW - the vast majority are not good for you...sooooo much salt and saturated fat.

For the longest time my husband and I searched for a nice, LARGE crepe pan only to find 10" diameter and under. Our solution - a dosa pan! They seem to average around 13" and we can use them for dosas too...bonus!

I clicked on this post because I thought you had my summer discovery in the photo (middle)...I've been calling it a plungo - a plum and mango hybrid. YUM! I hadn't seen one until my local farmer's market (east bay sf) this past weekend. Plum texture with distinct mango flavor.

When I was little, my brother and I spotted a bright yellow canary on the back porch. We didn't have a bird cage but we did have an old rabbit one so we it put outside. As we watched from the window, it flew over to the cage and proceeded to hop around it looking for the door (which was on top) and when we tipped it on its side, the bird flew right in. Thus, Larry (Bird) became a LOUD but melodic member of the family. Lesson = make sure the cage door is on the side.
