Wow, what a fresh new idea.

Oh, no, wait, I have one of these on my 1973 Raleigh.

Hmm, it seems to have deleted my last comment.

Anyways, I think you need something to draw the eye to something in the room other than the bins. Think colour and think scale!

Also, you can probably save the ugly bins by adding some larger-scale stuff to this room. Other than the furniture, the bins are the largest-scale thing in the room!

(Oh by the way, the Target near me in Boston had these canvas-covered storage bins on sale for $8 or so about a month ago... more expensive than your bins, but quite a bit nicer?)

I think it's probably an improvement, in that it's the right *scale* of item to be up there. But yeah, I think the bins look more like something you'd find in a garage.

If the motivation was to find storage space, this is a good solution. If the motivation is to attractively fill that cubbyhole, I think it needs work.

Personally, what I would have put there, were this my home, is my collection of old fans. I get them for under $10 on eBay and at flea markets. Some of them work, some of them don't, but they look terrific as a collection and I would die to have a little space like this for them!

I second the poster above who recommended reading Nickel and Dimed before making your decision.

Yeah, independents aren't bonded -- but unless things have changed since Eirenreich wrote that book, the lion's share of the money you pay the chains go to the chains -- and very little goes to the people slaving away cleaning your place.

And if you wanted to just go on self-interest, again based on that book, it sounds like the chains take an approach that focuses on the appearance of cleanliness rather than actual cleanliness (i.e., they don't use much hot water and detergent).

10am-8pm, whatever volume i like (though i'm not a huge blasting-loud guy)
8-10pm, quieter.
past 10, headphones.

But the main thing is this: Get your speakers off the ground. Don't stick them on furniture. Don't put them in your bookcase. Don't press them up against the wall. Put them on good heavy speaker stands, which will keep them from vibrating the floor and walls. You can have a LOT more volume without bothering people if the sound isn't being transmitted through the vibration of the floor.

Get an XLink BT and you can turn your old Western Electric phone (and any other landline phones in your house) into a bluetooth handset.

A light fixture like this

would really draw your eye up to the medallion.

The reason your medallion doesn't stand out is because there is a colourful stained glass lampshade with a gold chain hanging under it. :)

Close, low-maintenance friends, stay as long as you want.

Family members, please don't stay at all.

Not exactly the type of rule I can easy share with family, but it's basically how I feel.

I love these. I have two in blue (old one from my grandparents; new one bought in a store on Queen W), but I want them in yellow now that I've seen these...

I've actually had real problems keeping this alive. I had wondered if it was getting too much sun or if I was watering it too much. It never really seems to establish strong roots. I've repotted into better soil, changed the location, but it never really thrives.

(And I keep a lot of other far trickier plants alive. My orchid is happy as a clam, so it's not just a black thumb..)

New plan. Sell current red one on Craigslist for $50. Then go to Ikea, spend $100 on the same cabinet in 'silver finish'. Consider the $50 the cost of avoiding a brutal job with likely-to-be-disappointing results. :)

I have a very, very similar one that I actually painted white to make it look like your picture above :)

I think I would stay with white -- I would just consider putting new pulls on it. Think of something in this shape, painted black:
