@klt108: hm, that makes sense. it's funny, my parents lived in alphabet city when i was born, and my great grandparents lived in the tenements in the LES before my time, but having "moved back" there myself six months ago, i still have a lot to learn about my new/old neighborhood. thank you for the clarification!

anyway, more importantly: i love how much life has been breathed into this apartments. from what i've seen in person, the stuy town apartments have those nice floors and fantastic, clean bones, but without the instant charm or details of an apartment without major renovations, it takes some real ingenuity, a lot more editing, and a special touch to make an apartment like this feel homy. mission accomplished.

UNBELIEVABLE. one of my favorite movies if only just for the interiors.

minus the room filled with barbed wire. that part is pretty creepy.

people who love it: artists and creatives, people with children, list-makers

people who hate it: decor traditionalists, those with dust allergens and/or wall to wall carpeting

i happen to fall into the former camp (minus the children).

my senior year of college i lived off campus in a big beautiful house with a few of my girlfriends. while the garage and house were separated, they were connected by a large roof, the center of which was a ground-level porch, complete with furniture, darts, and a brick wall sectioning this little backyard haven off from the driveway. however, we spent most of our time on the garage roof, one side of which hung down low enough to lean a ladder up.

we had some of THE best parties in upstate new york that year. being dumb college kids we obviously did not see a problem having 20-30 people on our roof (of a house not renovated since 1976, might i add. my senior year of college was a few months ago!), that is, until our landlord charged us over $500 in damages to the gutter and roof.

that was bad. dangerous. expensive. disrespectful. but i still can't say i regret it...i must have graduated from dumb college kid to dumb kid in her 20's!

run with it!

three words: white christmas lights

i guess some people call them fairy lights too. but they're cheap and enchanting, and in bulk, strung across beams in a tent-like fashion, can be so gorgeous.

also white paper lanterns (http://pearlriver.com/v2/FramesCat.asp?iGroup=278)

and different sized mason jars with tea lights at every table.

actually i think i just described my dream wedding. have it for me please? i'm only 22. congratulations!!

i have to say, as a recent graduate of another fine arts program who was admitted but chose NOT to attend RISD (a wonderful college where many friends of mine have gone and continue to go, might i add. don't get me wrong here), i would just like to remind anyone within a convenient distance of any school with an art department that undergraduate/graduate shows are ALWAYS a breeding ground for fresh young talent who are willing to sell their work for pennies. don't discount a school simply because it does not have the name brand punch of some of their larger counterparts!

you don't live in stuy-town, do you? that's what it looks like, but anyway:

i don't think everyone needs to be so harsh, but i think the point is that even if you don't like what's going on, they are still high quality floors in what looks to be a very nice apartment for your first. i actually just moved to my first nyc apartment too, and it's the tiniest place ever for two people but in a good location (which is 90% of what we're paying for, i'm sure) with pre-war molding and bricks, so i can't complain. but i think everyone's point is that it's all relative.

that being said, carpet tiles and rugs will be your friend if you've got a real problem with it. it is true that if you're not allowed to strip the floors, that would mean you probably can't do anything else (like if you can't paint the walls you probably can't install wallpaper either). but don't worry, enjoy living in nyc for the first time and sometimes things that start out bothering you can actually end up growing on you or working out in strange ways.

I really think this is primarily a matter of bedding, which is really one of the most effective, low-maintenance ways of transforming a bedroom. I would nix the bedskirt altogether and really embrace the "boxy" feel of the room by selecting a stiffer fabric for the top blanket (like a raw cotton), perhaps in a khaki or off-white, since you have that fabulous doughnut painting and the two need not compete. since you're not afraid to mix styles, replacing/repainting the white bedside table with something darker, as to tie in with your dresser, may give the room a more cohesive look.

good luck!
