I had to move out of the windowless room in my apartment because I was getting too much sleep; I could, literally, sleep all day in there. I don't sleep as well but I love waking up to the sunlight and I get a lot more done.

How odd! I agree with Pi that the stair rail an planter look very busy. I'd cover it with beadboard and paint it a bright color to compliment your decor/color choices (I love that wallpaper, btw), lose the corner shelf and plant a fiddle leaf fig - http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_x9KSBX8x7o8/TTm6nzTq_BI/AAAAAAAAEeM/ZjXz6i90xq4/s1600/fivetowatch-designers-ED0610-04.jpg . They can grow really tall and would look grand next to your stairs.

I inherited my bedframe from a friend - nearly identical to #8 - and absolutely love it. It's been with me through 4 different bedrooms and always ends up being the focal point of the room; at this point, I can't imagine my bedroom without it. That said, I would search vintage/junk shops for these; when I lived in the south you could find something similar for a few hundred dollars or less.

That fan looks like this one from Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/202794268?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051&N=5yc1vZc4k5&R=202794268#.UT9kZxXs01I

We had one for an outdoor patio space and it worked well but was quite loud.

I agree with everyone's suggestion to paint the walls; I'd go with a soft white or a light grey with brown undertones. I would also paint that door and the trim bright white and swap all of the blinds out for curtains.

As for the cabinets, I wouldn't paint them either but you should definitely change the hardware; ceramic knobs and pulls in bright colors could be fun (check anthropologie for ideas). Depending on how much stuff you have, and how organized it is, I'd suggest taking the doors off of the upper cabinets and have open shelving. The wood is pretty, but less of it would definitely open up the kitchen and make the space feel lighter.

That nook is tricky, if you're handy, maybe build a wrap around bench and put a tulip table there?

Good luck!

I have the Movie Sofa from CB2 and I love it. It's quite large so I don't know if your space would allow for it. If so, it's perfect for lounging, comfortable, neutral, and has the bonus feature of being large enough to accommodate an overnight guest. I've had mine for 5 years and it's held up very well.

I love your new kitchen! The wine and cookbook storage, and the wood used to build it, are stunning. Great job!

I think you might have misunderstood the feedback on this tour. As I said, I have nothing against John's home. We have different tastes, yes, but it makes him happy, awesome! What I do not like about this house tour are the photos and editing; my dissatisfaction is entirely with AT, and it seems that is the general consensus. As even you stated, there needs to be less [superfluous] close up shots. These are not critiques about how John lives, they are critiques of the editorial quality of this house tour, which is severely lacking.

This house is not my style, but kudos to John for how happy it makes him. Also, best "Proudest DIY," maybe ever. What I don't understand about this post are all of the photos inside the fridge, making food, eating food. Overall the photos in this house tour are lacking and don't really showcase the house.

Cover the slats with plywood and stain the plywood to match the bed. It'll give the bed a platform feel until you can afford an appropriately size mattress. That bed is gorgeous. Enjoy!

I was also wondering about the fourth picture; it took me a minute to even see the bathtub. I'm looking forward to the comments from people who find it unseemly to have artwork and/or magazines in the bathroom. I would like to know how they feel about upholstered furniture.

I don't see any problem using color, especially if that's what you like, but I really like the grey tones in some of your pictures.

Since there is a lot of molding and some built-ins, could you do some more neutral colors and add pops of color in the molding, flooring or furnishings?

Also, it's nice that you want to consider your future-mother-in-law's opinions but isn't it more important that you and your future spouse love the house and color scheme?
