diny,

but these are the same people that have "discovered" downtown LA and claim it for "Angelenos" now.

I tripped over a plaque in downtown one day (the hipster flag was removed though):

Flooring - Check with the owner first. Otherwise, rug. And, you can take that with you when you leave.

Anyway, second year at University, I guess you should be getting a real up close look at floors... when you're passed out drunk. Otherwise, if you can paint the walls, do that on the cheap and live with it for the next two years (if grad school is in the plans,,, uh I ain't gotz no answer for you except more drinking!)

For real... keep up the studies.

P.S. wait til you ask questions for your own house. Double the thread size for sure. LOL!

Budget Solution for Parquet-Style Flooring? Good Questions

Why not keep them? Didn't cost anything. She could just buy the Heath tableware herself. I'm guessing a freelance food stylist could use them as a write-off. Also, I'm figuring as an aficionado of tableware, she wouldn't mind having another set around. No place to store them? That's what garages/parent's houses/siblings or friends are for.

But if she's going to sell them, she better have her aunt over for dinner one last time before she let's 'em loose.

But the question was "Would you sell one beloved object to finance another?" Depends. Things that I collect, no. Have a bunch of golf clubs, vinyl records and some toys that bring me joy by just looking at them. But I once sold a Corvette for another project car to work on and it wasn't even a big deal (ok, it was a little deal.) A lot of work, time and money went into restoring that car. I'm pretty sure letting it go wasn't a great deal because I wasn't into collecting Corvettes... yet.

One other factor for me is how difficult it would be to obtain a identical replacement. An example, my buddy looks back and wishes he never sold his 1968 GT500 Shelby Mustang. To rub it in, I always tell him "good luck replacing that one!"

or try the local Craigslist, ebay or business' closing up (mine was a conference table in it's previous life.)

Your grandmother had that living room done up! That's a cool looking lamp in the back right corner.

Funny, all I need is your grandmother's sideboard and then we would have matching dining rooms... a Nelson Bubble, an Eames conference table and a set of Eames DSX chairs (same color even except I have upholstered ones.)

So that makes pic four is my favorite use, as a sideboard (although I feel the fifth pic is what is was originally intended for... like in your grandmother's house.)

Repurposed furniture - I have a couple of round Eames Aluminum group tables. I want to make the smaller one, 36", a coffee table. So I'm looking for a short post to make that come true. Wondering if the Alum. Grp. ottoman post would work?

p.s. Aren't credenzas without legs?

I like to start with room temp or just slightly chilled large eggs. CIA says if using eggs straight from frig, warm bath to take chill off.

I turn heat down while placing eggs in water (don't want them to bounce and crack on me) then return heat to boil. I go 4 minutes from when water returns to boil, CIA says 5 mins.

I was told long ago about a quick check for the eggs - pull one from the water about 30 seconds before time is up and count to 10. When the egg completely dries at 10 seconds, you have a soft boiled egg ready for an egg cutter and toast strips.

I give 'em a quick shock in cold water... just so they're easier to handle.

I'm against the ban. It's a good way to "thin the heard" of people who may not be paying attention to what they should be doing.

But, also in agreement with many above about not knowing how effective it will be because policing would be difficult. Look how many break the law, here in CA, by not using hands free devices while driving. Don't even get a sorry wave from them when they swerve into me. They just keep on talking. Side note: at a stoplight I asked one person on the phone behind the wheel if they knew that was illegal. Response: "So what."

Also, I think that lady, who walked into the fountain at the mall while texting, is an idiot for trying to sue the mall. Says it negatively affected her. What's a frivolous lawsuit gonna do for her?

Last year, I came home early one day and a couple of thieves were on my roof stealing avocados off my tree and selling them to a small neighborhood market down the street... on two different occasions. A few Sherriff Deputys came and got the first set (they also had warrants out for their arrests for other crimes) but, the second set got away. They visited the store that bought them. Supposedly, they haven't done it again. I've spotted one of the thieves, that got away, picking fruit from other yards but the Deputies always seem to just miss him.

They haven't been back this year but I have a different "crew" start pickin' away at them... been invaded by raccoons this year. Animal control won't do anything about them. They say they can only come and pick up a "body". Don't wanna kill 'em but they been getting the good ones. Also, they're terrorizing the neighbor's cat.

One good thing about the whole situation, the Deputies are always cruising around. I gave them the avocados they confiscated from the store, about 60-70 of them (that was only part of the haul).

While I believe "let it go" may suffice with a spouse, it hardly seems enough for common room mates. I really would not call it surviving, as much as, as I would call it accommodating. In a marriage, you know what you were got yourself into and if you want to just give in, then do it. But, for room mates, wouldn't it be a common courtesy and just a little show of respect, to keep common areas tidy. I'm not the neatest person around but, I don't mind a little extra cleaning up here and there in common areas, just reciprocate every one in a while without having to be asked.

For room mates what about just having a list of responsibilities (what and when) that you both agree on. If some things are not completed, you get penalized (say buy dinner or drinks for a week.) If that doesn't work, find a new room mate.

Oops, just read through all the posts and realize it's wood (didn't realize you're dmvaughan 15)

As Jennifer 42 says, go to a cabinet maker. They can do what you want. Or if you wanna try it yourself, I think you might be interested in an epoxy coat for that high gloss finish. You just need a dust-free zone. As a bonus, like a clear coat on a car, it'll take out some imperfections of the paint... with enough layers! It's the clear coat on a car that makes it shiny, if you want the high gloss effect. And it's pretty durable.

What kind of material is the credenza? Do you want it for strength and durability or finish?

Sidenote: If I remember right, I thought I read where someone used an auto body shop to restore a Saarinen Tulip table and chairs.

As for powder coating, there's a place in South El Monte that my buddy turned me on to. I had some table bases done there (my buddy originally went for coating auto parts.) It's a shop that mainly works with a patio furniture manufacturer in the same complex (if it's not the same.) I can't remember the name but it's on Santa Anita close to the 60 fwy.

Sweet! Was that 8 Krona or 8 US$? Either way what a deal for Robin Day Poly chairs. I'll take a dozen at that price.

I had the same problem with my Eames DSX chairs. Mine were spotty, lumpy and loose in places. I've never seen a Poly chair in person, so I'm not completely familiar with the construction. So this may or may not apply.

On my DSX's, the fabric cover has a trim similar to car door edge guards (that hard flexible plastic-like material they used to put on new cars.) It's channeled like them too. I slipped them off the fiberglass shell of the seat; that's how I cleaned them. Oh, if they are built the same way, take the upholstery off outside. I realized that the seat was lumpy and loose because the foam had deteriorated or clumped up in spots. And that foam, it went everywhere! I went to an upholstery shop and got some thin (it's not really thick to begin with), dense foam and some spray adhesive. Cleaned up the fiberglass, applied adhesive, cut foam to shape and re-installed the upholstered covers (much harder now with the new foam.)

Hope everything goes well with your project.

I have storage bags, too. But, I took some 1"x4" lumber and built a simple frame; made it the size I wanted. I fixed a vinyl clad 1/4" sheet of plywood (the vinyl makes it easy to clean) to the bottom and put a double layer felt on the bottom side to protect my hardwood floor. I took some scraps from the plywood to make dividers. Lastly, an old sheet with some velcro covers it (it gets dusty under there!)

It's big enough that you can grab it from either side but small enough so it's kind of hidden.

Forget the set and get what you'll use. Like KatC said, find a local restaurant supply store and have at it. Don't over look a wok either. Really useful (stir/deep fryer and steamer in one) and it may impress your friends when your manhandling it tossing fried rice!!!

Also, go grab some cast iron. Will last your great-grand kids lifetime.

Ivy,

I retract my bamboo floors idea. Bamboo is eco-friendly; that's my latest kick. What about cork, marmoleum or Flor?

Another benefit of building out the fireplace wall to wall, like I mentioned before, is that the kitchen side of the service pass through could become an appliance garage! (auto door opener optional LOL!)

I trip out that the wood is used as a vertical element in the living room, horizontal in the kitchen and diagonal in the bathroom (is that an Aussie thing?) The diagonal pattern make it look super retro like it would have been in the Brady's neighbor's house or something. Also, what's up with the jogged wall next to the frig?

BTW, that's a killer yard. I foresee some cool outdoor living in your future.

If it were me:

I'd rip the carpet out - bamboo flooring in.

Don't touch the paneling. Drywall is meant to be painted - wood paneling adds warmth and character.

Visit Modern Fan Co.

Build out the fireplace flush wall to wall (you lose some sqft but you can get either hidden electronics wiring or built-in storage. If possible lose the curved element at its bottom.)

New window treatment or no window treatment, depending on privacy needs.

Chuck the stained glass for maybe just a frosted one.
