That comment about installing a pod made me laugh as I had just read that AT post a minute earlier. http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/before-after-a-boerum-hill-loft-gets-unpodded-189348

Google "DIY sun jar" to find instructions on how to make sun jars using your own type of jar (to get away from the country look). Or even just read here: Improved Sun Jars

Toothpicks! Poking and then eating his food with a toothpick somehow changes how our older son interacts with food. Even at almost 6, it's his favorite way to eat Indian food. BTW, "When a toddler is having a moment, even birthday cake offends!" is probably the best observation I've read this week.

What a great surprise to see Stephanie featured on AT today! In addition to her great style, she is a very thoughtful business owner. I had my eye on a lamp at her store. I sent her an email asking for the dimensions of the shade. A week later she sent me an email giving me the news that the lamp was sold that day. So much better than going back to the store and finding the lamp gone. I really appreciated the thoughtful email. Kuddos to Stephanie! One very important factor about Noun not mentioned in the post is that St. Cupcake (Portand's best cupcake bakery) shares Noun's retail space. Double the reason to go.

This may be something you don't want to think about, but you also want to consider how well the toilet actually works. The Alliance for Water Efficiency tests toilet performance and has a downloadable report of over 2,000 models. http://www.allianceforwaterefficiency.org/Maximum_Performance_%28MaP%29_Testing.aspx

I had a great success in our living room. I ordered 1 yard of four different colors of carpet from the carpet store. Then a carpet fabricator (actually the same company that cleans my rugs) cut the four colors into stripes of varying widths and then stitched and glued them together. Finally the fabricator added a binding around the edges. Now I have a custom made rug that is the perfect color and size for my living room. Here's a photo of it while it was still at the fabricator's workshop. http://pinterest.com/pin/280419514270175494/

My favorite brunch recipe is the "Breakfast Strata with Potatoes, Rosemary, and Fontina" from Cook's Illustrated. It is online at http://www.mealsmatter.org/recipes-meals/recipe/32573. You can double the recipe for a 9x13 pan.

Many bay window rods can be installed on the ceiling instead of the wall. For example, look at Antique Drapery Rod.
You could also use a ceiling mounted curved track, which is shown here: http://www.easycurtainideas.com/curved-curtain-rods.html

...sorry, I needed to edit my post more. You can either save the JPG to your computer and load it into Google image search, OR you can simply drag the image from the web page into the search field.

@Tracy333 : There is an easy way to find out the info. In another tab of your browser, go to Google's "Search by Image" tool at http://images.google.com/imghp?hl=en . Click the icon of a camera. Click "upload an image" and choose the jpg file from your computer. You can then click on the image of the pillow and drag it to the search field on the Google Image tab. The search will then return other images online that are similar. It was easy to find this pillow for sale on etsy this way at: http://www.etsy.com/listing/78119780/floral-retro-blue-green-and-grey-on

I'm with mschatelaine. I was surprised to see someone call busy_at_home's comment rude as insensitive. She was asked what made her live like a grown-up and gave a good answer.

Here's a Reuter's story about the Seigels' current life. According to the story he is going to start up construction again just to finish the facade of the house in order to make it easier to sell.

Instead of a baby shower our friends hosted a "Big Brother" shower that was focused around our son. It had his favorite snacks, a pinata and he got a few gifts that were baby toys to play with the soon-to-arrive little brother. He felt really special instead of feeling left out. He wasn't very interested in talking about the baby -- until the birth and then it was like a light switch turned on and he became a great helper with the baby. They are 4.5 years apart which probably helps.

My son and I made one a duct-tape raft last night and he loved playing with it during his bath. He liked experimenting by filling the bottles with water.

I'm no child sight development expert, but according to this guy who is (http://www.ski.org/Vision/babyvision.html ), while babies can see colors, "Infants reflexively prefer to look at high-contrast edges and patterns." Contrast is something that this room has a lot of, in addition to being fantastic and filled with all sorts of objects made by hand with love. From my personal experience, babies spend very little awake time in their rooms anyway. The rest of the world has plenty of color for them. Great job on the room!!!

UGGGG. Now I see that the reserved lemon juice is added to the ice cream mixture just before you churn it. The recipe really should warn you that you need to reserve the juice from the first step all the way, hours later, until you are ready to churn the ice cream. Now I'm bummed because I missed reading that. Who would have thought that there would be an important element between chilling the mixture and churning it?!?!

There are two errors in the recipe. First the salt is mentioned twice: you are supposed to add it to the milk mixture that gets boiled, and then you are also supposed to add it when you add the lemon zest. The other problem is with the lemon juice. When you add the zest to the boiled milk mixture, the recipe says to reserve the juice. But then the juice is never used. I suppose perhaps it is supposed to be used with the blueberry sauce, but if that's the case then the sauce instructions should say to add the juice reserved from the ice cream as well as the juice from the lemon in that recipe.
All of that being said, I made all the components last night and now here it is 5:45 AM and I have my ice cream maker running so that I can get the pie in the freezer and then serve it tonight. I have a feeling my partner is going to comment on all the noise when he gets up.

I have good Ikea memories. For the past 2 years, my now almost 5 year old and I have had our "buddy trips" to Ikea. Always on a weeknight, we enter the front door, go up the escalators and immediately buy him 10 meatballs and some pasta. Then we sit by the windows and watch the planes from the Portland airport. After dinner we go down the elevator and exit through one of the "secret" doors that get you right back to the entrance without needing to walk the entire circuit. My only bad memory is showing up one time in December and finding a line at the restaurant. It was some type of all you can eat Christmas buffet. So we waited in line 30 minutes and were then allowed to pay something like $12 for the meal. He had his 10 meatballs and I had some cheese and crackers. The rest of the food looked nasty. Not cheap, but he gets so much enjoyment from these outings that it is worth it.
