White fabric, hung against the walls with lights mounted from the scissor bracing washing down onto them.

How to hang the fabric? Secure really long 2x4s inside the outermost corners of the scissor bracing and attach the fabric to is, wrapping around the top so no wood shows.

$250 - $500? Seriously?

For what looks like 48 galvanized nuts, 64 galvanized washers, 4 threaded rods and about 24 feet of finished wood? Ummm, sorry, no. That's maybe $50 to $60 in materials plus some time measuring, cutting, sanding and staining and about 30 minutes of assembly (lots of nuts to adjust along the threaded rods). A fine DIY project but not worth the money he's thinking about.

Dormroom chic at best.

No really easy out-of-the-box solutions for this one, unfortunately.
The IR blaster equipment works best when you have some sort of master remote control that allows you to see all of the controls and infomation on the TV screen and/or on the screen of the remote itself. For most people, though, that level of expense, particularly if renting, is too much to be worth it.
I'd recommend buying/making a tall, narrow media cabinet (anchored to the wall) that has the screen mounted outside and the dvd player, cable box, etc. above or below the screen. Above would be my preference, so that channel changing, etc. is not blocked by the edge of the bed, covers and so on. You could either show the exposed faces of these devices or have a single low door that swings out/up/down to expose them when in use. Make sure to allow enough space between devices for air flow and cooling and put plenty of holes above and below them for cable manangement and cooling.

I think it's more of a social/lifestyle experiment than it is about a new design philosophy.

And the noise from all the roll-up doors would get on my nerves. Surely there could have been another solution. Perhaps french doors opening into each space. You would still get the same full-width opening into each personal space with little impact into those areas and a lot less noise. I know the noise isn't mentioned but there is no way those doors are quiet.

Forget the cats, what about the people below? Whether on the street or just a neighbor on a lower floor who may be leaning out their window, those ladders look like a potential danger--the first one in particular. How secure is it?

I'm not in any position to paint my front door (renting) but I've been torn between going with something bright like a red or a yellow or going the other way and doing a slick, glossy black.

Waiting seems like a good idea. You can always paint later on. The red/orange of the brick makes the green stand out even more, so the furniture might look more muted in the new place.

Try hanging some colored fabric or paint some butcher paper with the colors you have in mind and then pin them up around the room. It can be done in pieces and isn't as permanent as actually painting the walls.

Build/purchase/modify a large, floor-to-ceiling (or nearly ceiling height) wall unit of open shelving-keeping it as shallow as possible. The biggest opening would be for the television and smaller rectangular openings for the different components. You will need to secure the unit to the wall or have the base be deep enough to keep the whole thing from falling forward.

I would even suggest stepping the depth of each shelf back from deepest on the bottom to shallowest on top. If there is a backer board, paint it the same color as the wall, so it takes up less visual space. The shelves themselves would either be white to match the wainscoating and trim or the same color/finish as other major furniture in the room that isn't shown.

I would also vary the width and height of the openings and keep them random/asymetric rather than more formal and symetrical. I wouldn't cover any of the shelves but might think about adding a number of darker/black accessories to balance out the black of the television and components, spreading them out so the black is more evenly distributed.

I don't think I get the "self-watering" part.

The plants are contained and I am sure that the amount of moisture lost through evaporation has been reduced, but it doesn't look like they are somehow watering themselves.

I am a not a gardener, some maybe I am missing something.

I'd rather see a flat connecting bench (with storage below) and standard cushions/pillows. And the hot pink is just ugly.

A mix of obverse and reverse with no distint orienation for either. I dunno.

I love the look but if I did it I would have to have all the pennies showing the same side up.

Leather, definitely. Get the highest quality leather you can afford and that is available. It cleans easily, smells great (TMI?) and always looks great.

I agree on the "timeless" look of leather. It has a presence and weight that you just can't find in other materials.

I own one of these and have the arc ending over my bed. I replaced the oringinal shade (as pictured in your post) with an even larger-but shallower- eliptical paper lamp shade I purchased online: http://www.paperlanternstore.com/ovandrecpapl.html

It looks like they no longer offer the really big one I purchased (29" diameter) but still looks good. I am sure a smaller size would work with the Regolit floor lamp. The metal framework from the original shade will most likely not work with other shades, but it isn't a problem. Paper shades always come with their own internal metal frame/tension device and can be secured to the lamp cord.

Price the largest items individually and then group smaller, commonly valued items on card tables, in cardboard boxes or laid out on a blanket/tarp.
Example: A box with tapes or CDS- tape a flat price per item on the outside of the box
