We moved from our 3 BR house into a 350 sq ft cottage in the back. Rented out the main house. When the going gets tough, and at times it will, remind each other what let you to choosing the smaller space.
As for stuff, and the process of downsizing :
Even a small space has to support all the general functions of the larger home : Eating, Sleeping, Hanging Out etc, now it's most likely a Zone instead of a Room. Once you know, that you will still have all those areas, it becomes a little easier.
The hardest balance to find is between ruthless downsizing and gentle pairing down, maybe with a storage unit as a safety net for the things you just can't give up (yet?).
So if that is a possibility financially, go for it.
In the meantime, make and implement all the easy decisions first. That should already clear out at least 50%, right? Than choose your clear keepers, what will serve you best, and what you just don't want to live without.
When those 2 groups have been identified, sold, donated packed or at least marked as keepers, look at what's left.
Some of that might go into storage, be donated or lent to friends, or is CHOSEN to come along with you. Be gentle with each other, have fun and enjoy the adventure of consciousness about what is really, really meaningful and useful to you both . It's a great feeling to live in a space where every thing was chosen instead of having gotten there somehow.

The drawers in the first picture are fro IKEA, like EngineerChic has already posted. You could use those in other systems, provided you can drill holes in the right size to use their drawer slides. Another option would be to use a company that creates pull-out shelves to update your closet storage. These companies usually are used to upgrade kitchen cabinetry.

I also use the Google Calendar, managing 5 different calendars. Some are managed by several people. My problem is a timezones issue. The calendar displays 2 timezones, but it screws up when I'm in NYC and scheduling an appointment in CA. Anybody has a solution, and a recommendation for another program ?

I chose Google calendar over iCal because it is easier to coordinate with non-iPhone users.
All that is needed is a gmail account and the proper set-up for read and right privileges.
I also like, that I could easily access the calendar through the website from anywhere in the world w/o needing to pay for potential roaming charges on my mobile.

Well, looks like some of us have a definite opinion on this. I am a confirmed Underhand person. So much so, that if somebody else should have changed the roll of TP in my abode I will change it back. FYI I have heard that the waterfall method was endorsed by the army, which might explain other institutional policies f.e. the hotels mentioned.

In Case of Emergency ICE# is often looked for after an accident or such. I agree with Kaete's comment, leaving info accessible for people doing the right thing.

Hi Kristen,
I'm so sorry to hear about your experience. Like so many others, my girlfriend and I had our home broken into. Nothing was taken, but we had to block the intruder from braking into our bedroom. Luckily he(?) fled, and the police came fast. You asked, how long it takes to feel safe again...... well, honestly a long, long time. Initially sounds made me very nervous, new surroundings made me nervous. The biggest item stolen from you is your sense of safety. Our brake in was over 20 years ago, at this point I feel fairly safe, but I'm aware that the tide could turn any minute.
I hope you are a much faster traveller on the road to feel safe, loved and beautiful, always.

I have used PAX wardrobes on several occasions. The insides are easily customized to hold items of different shapes and categories. The sliding doors are especially space saving. I also would cut out the back of one wardrobe to make space for the white box. This also works great for outlets and light switches in bookcases. Go with the tallest model and leave the other wall open. If you wanted a freestanding solution, look at ELFA. You could do either a ceiling mounted sliding door or a curtain treatment to shield it from your eyes.

We use a 3 shelf Metro Shelf Cart for our media storage.
Tv on top, DVR DVD VCR, cable modem and Airport on second shelf, printer / fax cordless phone base on bottom.
Works great!

I have painted laminated surfaces before. Benjamin Moore 123 primer for latex paint is what I used. Clean with TSP, lightly sand the surfaces, wipe down and you are ready to go.
A couple of month ago I repainted my wooden kitchen cabinets. The Benjamin Moore people steered me towards a Latex paint, I had expected to use Oil based paint.
I'd rather use Latex, low VOC products.
Good Luck,
Sylvia

I have proudly declared for years that I live in an ironfree zone.
Secretly I have been eying those comercial steamers, which Idon't have space for, and mentally rejecting those travel versions.
This looks like a dream come true.

I have a KleenKanteen, that i like a lot. The largest size sometimes makes funny noises, "farts", when you use the drinking nozzle.
Hope they work on that.
Another thing that I have seen, are Snapple bottles wrapped in Duct Tape. Reuse before recycle?

Hi There,
my first thought went alomg Maxwell's idea. Ikea has a nice felt panel with small cutout holes as a design. Just don't make go all the way to the floor. That would make cleaning easier.
I also think that a sliding door would work. The track would be installed outside the doorframe. When you do the wash you would slide the door to the right, temporarily blocking the fridge. I did well with a PAX closet door from IKEA's as is department for a similar project.

There is a cute name for it, that I don't recall.
