love your use of the stairs for storage. we live in about 900sq/ft & did something similar for our wine storage & we get a kick out of how others get a kick out of it! Daniel's Square Footage Challenged Small Cool Contest |

we only have 900 sq ft of space & we live on a river that floods often enough that keeping items sitting around is simply not smart. the living part of our house is raised up (garage is underneath) but i refuse to store bulk items. what i have learned to do is not use so much! i learned to live without all the paper towels & started using bar keepers rags to eliminate that waste as well as the storage. learning to use less means i have to buy less. bulk may be cheaper, but just because you can, doesn't mean you should! wow! my hubs & i do the same thing! that's how my kitchen & living room floors got painted. i put hardwood down in the bedroom on another trip he went home. he says he's scared to see what the next flooring project will be the next time he leaves! i just recently read about a few other bloggers who did that & love the idea. what an inexpensive way to revitalize an area most people think is a lost cause! my ceiling is not bead board, but it's that gritty sand-like coating & i'm thinking about doing something similar to cover it since patching it is a pain in the tush! 8 years ago i did the same thing in my kitchen. the previous owners had installed carpet in the entire house, including the combined kitchen/dining room. and it was the low low pile tight weave carpet...in green....gingham! ugh! i just looked at it one day, saw a loose corner & started pulling. in 15 min my friend & i had the entire thing pulled up - it had been put down with glue. i immediately used some porch paint & some sample paints to create A Design I Could Live With. that floor went through 2 more interations until we finally remodeled the space 2 years ago. i never looked back and, in some ways, still love the old painted floors the best! i used the exact same board for my calendar display just like photos 3 & 4. i spray painted mine red to give it some punch. word to the wise though, if you do decide to paint them, it will take multiple coats & sandings to get them to look smooth. i didn't stop to think about how absorbent chipboard is. it looks fine now, but i wasn't prepared for that part. i love the execpected look when using them as frames for photos though. 5 Creative Uses for Clipboards at Home |

the smartest thing we ever did in our Kitchen Reno was a complete accident! we tore out all the cabinets for a complete redo with IKEA. here is the thing about IKEA: those vignettes that you see in the store? they didn't seem so big in the store (because of all that open space) but when you get home, it can be a different story. like so many people i know, i love their big, spacious islands & knew i wanted that too. so when we tore out our old cabs, we rearranged all of them in our space just like the new IKEA kitchen was shaping up to be (we'd not finalized or purchased anything yet). an entire wall of old cabs that was now going to be floor-to-ceiling windows, got re purposed as our makeshift island (complete with OSB top & faux cardboard sink). turns out that 48" wide island in the store was going to impede flow in my kitchen. so what looked okay on paper, turned out to be a bad idea in reality. but this "dry run" helped us reconfigure some cabs & resize the island to something just as functional but more appropriate! we lived with this for about 3 months & it saved us so much time & effort. 2 years later, i have NO complaints about my kitchen layout & even have 2 cabs that have nothing in them after pairing down some stuff as well! we completely remodeled out kitchen almost 2 years ago & in an effort to get as much stuff off the counter, i splurged & bought the large Knife Dock from The Container Store. i caught so much grief about how expensive it was but, like this article says, it makes all the difference any time i open that drawer. i LOVE the functionality & how it looks & have NEVER 2nd guessed that purchase! i am on day 16 of a complete texting fast for Jan! it was somewhat hard at first but i absolutely love being phone free! the most amazing realization was not how much i texted but how much i checked my phone to see if i got a text. that became such a mindless habit & now that i'm not texting for the entire month of Jan i've become so aware of how annoying my own behavior was just as much as those around me. i did, as tarabelllucci mentioned, email friends & relatives in advance so they would know to call me. i also blogged it for anyone else that i missed: Liveblogging Day 11: Media Fasting Liveblogging the January Cure |

the guys in my group love Moleskin notebooks. you could personalize each with their name, a funny quote, or cartoon character that best represents them. just print whatever it is you plan to stick on their out onto color shelf liner then cut them out. if you have one of those fancy machines (like a silhouette) that does it for you all the better! honestly it's just hard to tell from the photos what colors you're dealing with here but i think i would go for something perhaps the color of the grout in the brick. because of the red & the orange & the brick accent that you mention, i don't think you need your floor to be an accent piece. in the photo, the brick looks to be more of a beige tone & not the red brick you see everywhere. is that correct? if so, i imagine the grout is a grayish or sandy color. perhaps something in a sand tone since you have so many other things competing for attention. besides a sand tone might help hide dirt better. not sure if rubber flooring colors are solid or come in any patterns (like linoleum products), but i saw some great lightly mottled patterns out there when we did our floor in Forbo Marmoleum last year. i would agree with AUNTI LAURA & MCROSS, look at investing in a 3 or 4 sided canopy if you are wanting to get some shade on the outside as well as the inside. Zip tie 2 PVC (or even galvanized fence post cuz they're cheap) to the railing for 2 of the posts. using an outdoor umbrella stand with a post in it to create the 3rd and/or 4th post stand against the wall. then attach the canopy to it. you could even use large clay/plastic post for the pole(s) & plant something in them to distract from the poles themselves & weigh down the pots!
