That's my friend on the bike!! And my roommate worked for The New Amsterdam Project for awhile too, mostly delivering CSA shares. Seems like a great company. Those bikes have a really neat electric assist function for getting up hills.

I have two dogs and I also work as a dog walker and pet sitter, and occasionally have dogs boarding in my home, so every single design decision I make keeps the dogs needs in mind. It's a two part concern, choosing items that are easy to clean, and choosing items that camouflage the hair and dirt.

I have a lot of throw blankets in my living room for draping over the couch and chairs, it's easier to throw a blanket in the washing machine than it is to clean a couch.

I love Flor tiles, you can just take up one of the tiles and clean it in the sink if there is an accident. Also, it's way cheaper to just replace one or two tiles than a whole rug.

P.S. I live in Jamaica Plain too.

If anyone is interested, here is a blurry phone pic of my bedroom with the Tundra flooring (be kind, my room is still 'in progress'):

and here is the 'before', you can see a tiny bit of the horrid carpeting:

I put it into my bedroom, shortly after I bought my place last year. It's okay, certainly better than the nasty, stained, turquoise carpeting that I ripped out. It was not my ideal choice, but I had a serious budget and nothing but plywood underneath that gross carpet.

It's held up pretty well, even with two dogs. I agree that it doesn't look finished at the edges, and I have thought about adding some molding, but I've got furniture pushed up against most of the walls so I really don't notice it. It does bubble up in one spot but it's only because I didn't realize until too late that my floor wasn't completely level under the carpet.

I'll probably rip it out at some point and put in carpet again, or real hardwood if I win the lottery or something.

$40?? I feel like this would be SO easy to make yourself with some felt from the fabric store.

Regarding the 'Room to Improve' article, what the dog needs is a good CRATE and some basic training.

Regarding everyone's suggestion of an area rug...the problem is that an area rug that will be large enough to make a difference in that room will cost almost as much as putting in new carpet, or laminate hardwood.

I had the same issue with the master bedroom in the condo I bought this past winter, and I ended up installing laminate hardwood from ikea. It cost about $300 and was a royal pain in the ass to install, but much better than stained, 1980's style, teal carpet. You could probably have a better carpet installed for about that as well.

Some tips for reducing the price of having carpet installed: rip out and dispose of the old carpet yourself, and try to find some remants on sale as recommended above.

A warning: ripping up carpet is pretty annoying, get a good pair of kneepads. It's totally doable though. Welcome to home ownership!!
