I just bought a house; closed on June 1, 2012. And I LOVE it. For me, I just HATED apartment living (sharing walls, feeling the loud music in my apartment, etc). I bought a newly renovated house -- new carpet, paint, bathroom, kitchen, fence, shutters, roof, windows -- so I haven't had any major issues with the house. For me, owning just made sense. I pay less than what I was when I was renting. I am SO much happier that I don't share walls with anyone.

Not crazy about the brass. I just went a replaced all my brass kitchen knobs with chrome ones. Brass is just so... 80s to me.

I am currently in the process of buying a house. I put my offer in a month and a half ago, and I am waiting to hear back (it's a short sale). The real estate agent is hopeful that I will get the house since it's a good offer. So... *fingers crossed*

What I wanted was: DETACHED house, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, off-street parking, no big trees by the house (I live in a hurricane-prone area and Isabel left me hating trees by houses). I honestly don't care about an updated kitchen or bathroom or whether the house has carpet or hardwood or laminate. As long as the house is in good condition, and the flooring and all the rooms are in good condition, then I'm good.

What I may be getting: 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, carpet in the bedrooms, laminate flooring in the open-concept living area, big fenced in yard, garage, and 2 big trees (ah well -- that's what tree removal companies are for). It is in a GREAT neighborhood, too. I hope the bank accepts my offer or comes back with a counter-offer I can live with!

I painted my last apartment when I signed I knew I was going to be there over a year. I moved a year and a half later, and it was hell painting my apartment back to the original colors. Paint is good, but one day you will move out and dread having to repaint.

I've been getting rid of the small things (clocks, figurines, etc.) in my living room and it really does make a difference. I haven't changed anything else yet, but the room just feels different because of the stuff I have taken away.

Definitely agree with the greenery. I have a lot of plants in my living room, and it makes the room more cheery :)

Paint the cabinets white, change the handles, keep the floor as is. Paint the wall a color that isn't white. I'd keep it simple.

I was expecting an atrocious white paint job when I clicked this. The chairs look great; I like fabric. And it looks like the wood has been cleaned/stained... looking good!

My apartment complex has two "types" of apartments -- ones that face the street and ones that crowd together in a U pattern. The ones that crowd together in a U pattern have assigned parking spaces in front of their apartments. I, however, live in an apartment where it faces the street and there is no assigned parking. 8 out of 10 times, I am able to park in front of my apartment. For those 2 times I am not able to, I get HIGHLY irritated.

Sometimes the idiot kids/teenagers sit on MY front steps. This is happened a few times since I moved in (which was in May 2011) and it is so irritating and rude. Since school has been back in session, this hasn't happened recently.

Never thought of doing that! Now I can add a pop of color to my living room without painting the walls. Great idea!

Cheap & Easy: Painting the Inside of the Front Door

I have only ever lived (by myself) in two apartments.

I lived in the first one for about 2.5 years. $610 rent+utilities included. A STEAL. The actual apartment though... there was nothing interesting to look at. It was dull. Then came the bugs in the kitchen (ick!) and neighbors who "serenaded" me every night. Maintenance never came back to finish repairs; they left the jobs half done. I moved out only 2.5 months ago after there were gunshots outside of my bedroom. I found an apartment the next day and moved a month later. Sayanora, crappy apartment!

The apartment I have now is a one bedroom townhome. Friendly neighbors. Good rent price. Good location. Great rental office people. The apartment is a lot more updated and just nicer to be in.

When apartment hunting, bring along a friend/parent/someone with you who will point out the good and bad things that you may overlook. Drive past it at night -- are there lights? Strange people lurking about? Noise? Parties? Check for bugs in the kitchen cabinets.

If I were to move again
