How did they let you paint the walls? I did paint our UofC grad housing kitchen, but the walls... would have loved to do that!

Well done! We're also in UofC housing (Chicago Arms building- moving out in a month though (:); I recognize the floor, kitchen...oh, what a challenge to make it work, but you did it!

I also like IVAR the best; mine are painted white and look sooo good! (: Also, the flexibility is amazing; in one corner of my apartment I build over a radiator with the IVAR system- no Billy can do that!

I find books and bookcases full of them are the most challenging design element in a home; they provide a lot of visual clutter and colors that hardly match any decor colors you have. It doesn't really help I live in a tiny place; we have 5.5 full bookcases in a 550sqft apartment. We arrange by size to get the most books in a bookcase, so in our current place no color arranging. Honestly, I think color arranging could work, really depending on amount of books a color. But living in a paint swatch...I don't know... Ideally I'd have a library in my home to keep the rest of the spaces serene and light. Or, putting them in a hallway....well I'll keep dreaming (:

I also prefer the window side, whatever side that may be. Although if I ever were to be a mom, we would have to swab sides, since there is no way the crib can be on window side and I'll probably be the one up all night (:

Interesting post-- My husband (student) and I (freelancer) try to take it by the semester; when he has a busy semester, I do more cores and when I teach or have a lot of jobs coming in, he does more cores. Right now I do most of it, I actually enjoy it. Deep down I'm such a homemaker and use 'my turn' to do some additional redecorating/thorough cleaning. (:
We don't have a large income and make ends meet by being thrifty and getting the most out of life on a budget-- and we love it! We save money on things others pay folk to do, like cleaning, travel, finances, design work etc. Therefore to me those are considered 'jobs'... we save MONEY taking care of these ourselves. We didn't really choose to live like this, but is really starting to grow on us; we work to live, not live to work!
I do have to say that earning some money myself does help as some of the posts above discuss. You contribute to a good life in many ways; part of ours right now is to DIY!

This is fun, I recognize a lot of products I prefer as well.

Always buy:
Tide detergent, Ziplock bags, Clinique skin care and makeup, Ocean Spray Cranberry juice, Egglands best eggs, Yogi green super antioxidant tea, Pyrex, Paradontax toothpaste (not for sale in US- bring a load every time I'm in Europe), Neutrogena Acne wash, CVS earth friendly toilet paper, Calvin Klein towels and a lot of Trader Joe's products (Tofu, nuts etc)...

Try to always buy, but cheat when I see a really good deal with other brand;
John Frida hair care, Mrs Meyers Lavender cleaning products, Johnson & Johnson Lavender body wash, 7 stars farm yogurt, Calvin Klein sheets...

Living in different countries makes you learn so much! As a European I also grew up with an electric kettle, but switched to a stove top one as soon as I got married- so much better! They last forever and you can use it everywhere around the globe (no specific power outlet). Also, they usually look way better. I have an Italian design one and a Dansk one- no electric kettle can tip that! What I like about the States is build in closet space- so smart and green! Instead of purchasing huge closets that will you'll have to slep all over the place when you move and pray they fit in your new place- built in ones are such a green solution and so easy.. They should build them in European homes as well (as they did before 1960ies).

The broom method is the best. We tried to be nice to our loud tv neighbors, but they will not come to the door and talk (instead they talk to each other that the guy has to quiet down--probably not aware we hear every single word). So, the 2nd time we banged the door, third time use the broom. Seems to help.
When we ever to have kids; that's when it's payback time and I get the broom treatment...I know, LOL! Well, that's how I learned about it, when I was a kid and neighbor downstairs had to use it daily to shut us up....

Kinda pointless- this germ obsession is causing more trouble that protection. That's why kids these day's have so many allergies and folks not getting immune to 'normal' germs; all because of over-sanitizing. Cleaning is good; getting obsessed with germs not.
