Eat soup. It will warm you up and start your day with some vegetables. I recently (last week) started a blog that focuses on breakfasts for people who follow a paleo eating style; all of the recipes are savory and grain free, and some are egg-free. www.primalbreakfastclub.com.

You can buy elasticized bowl covers under the brand Cover Mate. A bag contains a variety of sizes and I have found them at Target. The smaller ones are just the right size for covering the smoke detectors when I am cooking at high temps.

Brussels sprouts and extra-virgin olive oil is a delicious combination, but the oil is not a good fit for high heat.

Zucchini/summer squash also makes a good substitute. Use a julienne peeler to make spaghetti-like noodles, or a regular peeler to make ribbon-like noodles. Saute. Delicious!

Butternut squash -- it's almost like dessert. Mashed cauliflower with garlic could almost pass for mashed potatoes.

Zoeroth, Third World families aren't visiting cooking blogs, or planning Mothers' Day brunches, either. It's true that we (all of us here, Paleo or not) enjoy the privilege of being able to choose what we want to eat, and can consider macro- and micronutrients over calories. It's not fair, that's true. But many people have trouble digesting grains and attribute their discomfort to having eaten too much or too quickly. Personally, I did not realize just how lousy I had been feeling until I no longer had a bellyache after every meal -- and I had been eating all homemade, whole grain, etc., and no processed foods. I am not advocating that anyone else eat this way as I am not a qualified nutrition expert, but the fact is that it can't hurt you. All of the nutrients in grains and legumes are also available in other foods.

I third the recommendation of Mark's Daily Apple. You can download two free cookbooks of reader-submitted recipes, as well as a free fitness guide. (No, I was not paid to say that)

I eat this way, too, although I eat small amounts of dairy, as well, as in the Primal Blueprint. Cutting out grains and legumes has made room on the plate for more vegetables. I was never much of a bread-eater, but I do miss my homemade split pea soup. Other than that, not much of a sacrifice. The Paleo/Primal community is huge and there are hundreds of excellent blogs that provide recipes and food porn.

By the way, The Kitchn did a feature on the kitchen of someone who follows a Paleo diet. I think it was last year.

I don't know that I'd serve it to company, but I sometimes mix plain Greek-style yogurt with cocoa and sugar. Even better than chocolate ice cream.

I almost forgot about Oopsie Rolls, which are made from eggs and cream cheese (no grains or added sugar). There are lots of recipes; here's one: http://blog.yourlighterside.com/2009/05/gluten-free-low-carb-buns-aka-oopsie.html

People who follow a Primal Blueprint/Paleo-type diet avoid grains and added sugar, and limit fruit, so recipes for this diet are mostly low-GI. You might find additional ideas on any of the many blogs about this way of eating. Just Google "paleo recipes". Hope this helps.

I make salmon cakes from canned salmon, egg, coconut or almond flour, and Old Bay. I reheat them in the microwave. If I've made any kind of soup earlier in the week, I might have that, especially if the weather is cold or dreary.

@Pi, I used my own digital photo print of a cherry tree in bloom, in a ready-made frame with ready-cut mat. If the picture gets damaged, I can just print a new one.

Hernia Movers -- that's hilarious! For my last move, I used Beltway Movers (DC area), and I can't say enough good things about the experience. They did everything by a checklist, and offered all kinds of suggestions and options that made the move virtually stress-free.

I've been there. If they are set on buying new furniture, anything you find at that price is likely to be veneered or otherwise not natural hardwood (one exception: I have seen some inexpensive pieces made of solid sheesham at World Market and other places, but the construction quality is low). Not that there's anything wrong with veneer, but I damaged my brand new veneered Drexel Heritage dresser (bought from Overstock.com for $900) within an hour of its delivery. It has since been fixed. I love the dresser, but would not buy another veneered piece. Vintage is a better option.

I have never understood why these things cost as much as they do. Even the cheap discount store kind -- just a couple of pieces of metal tubing and some nylon webbing -- cost about as much as a patio chair at those same stores.

Last year, I finally got around to having a hand-me-down sofa bed reupholstered. The orange and red striped monster was labeled Dreamliner. My grandparents bought it in the late Sixties and gave it to me when I was in college. The frame is super-solid and the size is just right. I had the upholsterer cover it in taupe cotton and replace the seat cushions with firm foam. It went from garish to chic. I'm so glad I went this route instead of buying new.
