I would think that the key to inheritable furniture is loving it in the first place.
So yes, if you love it -- it will be important to your children.
.
My parents didn't really have a sense of style when it came to home decorating. The only things I wish I had, are things they got rid of in the late 80s. The mid-century davenport (sofa) that was in our house when I was a toddler and in grade school.... and the old kitchen table with the steel legs and metal trim.... but they're long gone.
Even now, the only furniture in mom's house that I would claim for my own, is an old glass front bookcase... it's probably not valuable but it's simple, streamlined design and the fact that I sat in front of that bookcase for the majority of my childhood while pouring over books is what makes it special.
.
Other than that, I have a couple items that my dad made in high school shop class in the 50s - a side table with tapered legs and routed edges and the tiniest drawer - all features that met the requirement of the assignment!! A sweet little cedar box - also with routed edges. And I'm still making a case for the piano bench... but mom's not ready to give it up.
I love them because my dad made them, and he never did woodworking again after high school. It just so happens they fit my favorite mid-century style as well!!
.
I WISH I had furniture that my family loved - but furniture wasn't a priority for them.
I have a credenza that I love more than any piece of furniture I've ever lived with, but I don't have any children so who cares but me?
But my friends know how much I love it!!
I've joked that they can just bury me in it!

How To Choose Furniture Now that Someone Will Want to Inherit Later

I agree with most of these rules... but NEVER have family members host a shower.

And to those who eschew showers and weddings altogether (because surely, they got theirs, and now their over it!) I'm over 40, never been married. Yes I have everything I NEED - but I have never had anything nice. Pots and pans - ha! I'd kill for a decent set of knives and some real silverware!!! (not talking Nordstroms here... just some silverware without plastic handles.)
So if I EVER get married, oh, I am HAVING a shower! Considering how many I've attended and hosted in my lifetime... oh there will BE a shower!
.
And no, I'm not declaring where I'm registered. Seriously, how hard is it to go to your favorite store website and put in the bride and grooms names to see if they have a registry? Not hard!!!
But I will say, I miss the old days, when all my cousins got married and they got sets of towels, a toaster, some random art... whatever their loved ones thought they might need or enjoy. A shower gift was a set of dish towels and some spatulas!!! and it was lovely.
Everything is so over the top these days.
.
Sometimes I just wish I could get married, just to show how it ought to be done.

Five Controversial Decor Items (And Why You May Want Them)

So true!
I live in a third floor walk up in the mile high city... so the altitude with my asthma is more a factor than the actual stairs!

When my mom comes to visit, she notices that it's hard the first day... but by the time she leaves she's stronger and it's easier. (She's 76 years old)
She knows she's a bit weaker since she's now moved into a house without stairs. But we're blessed that Mom is in such great health!

Just a question for those who are creeped out by cowhide rugs and the like.
Actually two questions: Do you eat meat? and What are your shoes made of?
.
Seems to me, if we're going to eat meat, we should use all of the animal. What? you just want to bury the hide or something? What a waste.

Ah hah! The second map explains it!
I live in Menver. Yes, it's well known that Denver has a greater population of men.. and somehow that manages to skew things in a very odd way. Instead of the men realizing they'd better get their act together in order to get a good woman... turns out it's skewed to where the women are so desperate for men that they're over-accommodating (ahem) and the men therefore have no reason to settle down.

Although, your second map there shows that there are more single women over 40 than men - which explains the particular drought in my area.

When I was a kid, I was at a friends house whose mom kept the kid's undies in baskets in the bathroom. The bedrooms were all upstairs and the only bathroom was on the first floor - so why scatter the basics all over the house? They needed undies after bathing and there they were!

Best Sleeper Sofas & Sofa Beds 2013 Apartment Therapy's Annual Guide

If you're just looking for something to accommodate the occasional guest, I can recommend the Soho Sofa from ZGallerie. It doesn't fold out... but when you remove the back support cushions, the sofa is comparable to a twin sized bed.
My mother just visited and I gave her the bedroom, while I slept on the sofa - I simply outfitted it with sheets. Sleeping was VERY comfortable, almost better than my own bed.

I bought this sofa with the intention of having extra sleeping space. After sleeping on it myself - I'm over the moon with my decision.

It doesn't hurt that the style of the sofa is gorgeous and complements my MCM style without being so obviously MCM.
One of the best decisions I ever made!

by half-@$$ed, i mean that I haven't given up beans and potatoes.
I'm allergic to everything... so taking away more foods from the few I can have to begin with is just too much.

On Saying No to Paleo: Why Eating Isn't One Size Fits All
5/24/13 4:47 PM

I do what I call a half@$$ed Paleo diet!
I cut out breads and grains - when I did, for the first week and a half I thought I had a flu bug. My stomach hurt so bad.
Now I realize I was addicted to bread! Once I detoxed from all the bread and genetically modified grains... I feel great.
Now I no longer pass out on the couch every evening after work.
I have more energy.

I've decided I'll have bread here and there -- it's not like I can NEVER eat bread or corn again. But I've learned that when I do... I am so crazy tired, it's not worth it!
I ate two donuts one day (they were a treat at the office) and promptly went home and velcroed myself to couch for the evening! NOT WORTH IT.
but then, donuts are never worth it.

#6 is counter intuitive but true!
I have the Soho sofa from Z Gallerie in a very small living room.
when it was delivered to replace the old loveseat I had in the space, it took me about a month to get accustomed to the size - worried it was too big for the space - until I got used to it.

My mom came to visit for Mother's day, and her first words upon seeing the living room were, "The whole room looks bigger!"
I didn't realize it until she said it, but she's right... it really does!

Moving: What Do You Do When Everything Goes Wrong?
5/3/13 7:17 PM

When I first moved to Denver, I lived with relatives in Lakewood/Golden (suburbs, one might say) for the first few months... and it just never felt right. Too quiet. In fact, I was deciding that I didn't like Denver.
Then I moved downtown, in the Cheeseman Park neighborhood (just two blocks from the park) When I was settled into the tiny little apartment on the second evening there, I suddenly felt a sense of peace wash over me... "Home" I thought. That's when I realized I could hear a helicopter buzzing over my building. That's what felt like home.
I hadn't put it together before then, but in my last two cities, my apartments were either in the flight path for the hospital - or the flight path for the police chopper.
Previously in Omaha, I could hear Able One (police chopper) take off every night just as I retired to bed - to start it's nightly rounds, and it became a comforting sound, like a lullaby.
So when I was making an offer on my condo in Denver, near the hospital - and I heard a Life Flight Chopper pass over, I knew I had found my home!
That hospital has since relocated, and I don't hear helicopters on the regular any more, but it was a gradual weaning.
Occasionally, I hear one on the way to the other hospital and it always makes me feel at peace... and I say a prayer for whoever it is arriving for emergency care.

The phrase "nitty gritty" just bugs me - can we please phase it out of our vernacular? Please.
Do you know that "nitty gritty" was originally a reference to a woman's pubic area, particularly in a derogatory reference to black women.
Please think when you use words.
