They are awesome for dressing a salad (not just serving it). Use a decent sized bowl and add your dressing, (i end up using a lot less if i use the tongs this way) and mix while shaking the bowl simultaneously and you will get a well dressed salad.

Yeah, my dad was born in Italy along with all of my grandparents... I have a lot of learning to do still.... The hardest part is finding the best quality ingredients. Most Italian food is very simple to make but you need top notch quality and yes, most likely growing it yourself is the best option but not always feasible. I wish you luck!

If you are not going for a full knock-down-a-wall type renovation, I would highly recommend mounting some lighting under the upper cabinets to really brighten up your work space. And i would do it all the way around.

Other ideas - Lighter color backsplash, remove clutter from countertops - reorganize your kitchen for the things you use daily/weekly and the rest can be stored elsewhere.

Good luck!

This is a terrible but true story - i was literally lighting my gas stove just as my cat jumped up onto it and WHOOSH smell of burnt whiskers filled the kitchen. He was about a year old at that point. He's 14 now, and though he just burnt the very tip of his whiskers (thank god!) he has NEVER tried to jump onto the stove since. He will only go onto the counter if there are flowers to be eaten and even that seems a lot less these days.

I have heard and know first hand that lemon is an effective cat repellant. My cat is a menace at dinner time and i love to douse my food in lemon so he usually leaves me alone and pesters other folks at the table. Perhaps a few days of sliced lemons on the surface of the stove/counter will serve to deter the cat?

Add some dijon mustard to the dressing. Or, soak some chopped shallots in the vinegar (or lemon juice) for an hour or so, then add the olive oil & chives.

I'll also back the pasta idea - my son is almost always game for pasta. He also does well with "soft" meats like meatballs (turkey, beef, pork, whatever you like) or a turkey meatloaf. Sweet potatoes are also always popular with my toddler. Anything you can dip in "sauce" like ketchup, or cheese sauce or buttermilk dressing.

Toddlers are also known to declare everything yucky so definitely don't get upset if the kid gives you a hard time. If you have yogurt and fruit on hand as a back up just in case you should be in good shape.

We did a dresser as changing table so it has all the clothes, etc, also in it along with diapers, creams, etc. Definitely worth finding some sturdy thrift furniture if you can - we took my husband's childhood furniture and painted it and added new pulls from Anthropologie for my daughter (who is due on Saturday!).

Also, as for art, i love love love Blik stickers. www.whatisblik.com ... lots of fun options and they can be removed/moved without damage. My son loved his zoo animals (placed near the dresser where we changed diapers most often) and now we moved them to my daughter's room and have gotten my son a new design.

If you have an active moms group in your area, this is a great way to get loads of second hand baby stuff and also a great place to later on unload said baby stuff when you no longer need it.

Good luck!

I have weaned myself off caffeine 2x now for 2 pregnancies and I found it much easier to do the slow wean. i moved from full caff to half caff for a few days to 3/4 decaf to no caff. It's hard at first but you will feel much better when you are done. I did drink decaf throughout and have developed an immunity to the flavor of it.

Unfortunately after pregnancy i have tried to stay caffeiene free but it hasn't worked... 8/

Pasta with fried eggs - just brown some garlic in olive oil, crack a few eggs in and toss with just pulled out of the water linguini, top generously with grated parm. Sometimes needs a little spoonful of pasta water so it's not too dry. love love love this dish.

Will second the recommendation to try sheep or goat's milk cheeses as they are sometimes tolerated where cows milk isn't.

Dave's gives a kick-@ss course in fresh pasta making (among other things) and it really is pretty easy to do. Hardest part is rolling it out. I think you could make your own fresh pasta on a sunday and freeze batches for use during the week.

We are grateful to have Dave's right down the street so we take advantage of their delicious options regularly.

Have also done this with the parsley, and also a saffron flavored pasta. I've wanted to try more combos but since having a baby all that pasta-making free time has gone out the window!

Restaurant Tip: Add Fresh Herbs to Pasta Dough

Our cat is too chunky to get up on the counter with any regularity (sounds like he may have some 'big boned' pals out there!) but he will make the effort to get up there if we have any fresh cut flowers, and in particular he goes nuts for baby's breath (no idea how that came about). So we have to put books/bags/etc on the bar stools so he can't jump up on them to get to the flowers.

With regards to food, he definitely gets extra affectionate when the refrigerator is open, etc, loves the sound of the can opener, but mostly it's meowing and pawing at our legs. If i want him to stop pestering me, presenting him with a half of lemon or some other citrus usually works really well.

I will say though that any plates left on the floor/couch/ other easily reachable places have been hard to keep him away from. I once fell asleep on the couch after having some bone-in chicken for dinner (in front of the tv) and when i woke up my kitty had dragged the carcass across the room and was happily chomping away. Lesson learned...

I also add the bread soaked in milk. And i make them with (dark) turkey meat, or all lamb, or all beef/all pork. Lots of variations. I've never used rosemary or paprika but I do add fresh parsley and a generous amount of grated parm.
