Is This Backsplash Makeover Worth the Effort?

Since this is a rental AND you are looking for an easy, economic solve for the backsplash, I recommend you keep going with the stainless steel tiles. The stainless steel does look great with the grey cabinets. Eventually, new hardware could be considered. The pink counters are the primary issue. You still need to accessorize and add other elements to your kitchen -- oranges and reds that will tone down the pink but will complement the greys. Consider wood elements, too. Natural wood and greys are beautiful. Send pics when the project is finished.

It is a very good example of creativity. Necessity is the mother of invention, isn't it? Very clever and functional. One item that lends a bit of visual cacophony is the stretch of fabric beneath the sink. I would suggest gathering the fabric into folds, pleats or box pleats so it offers a softness to the hard edges. Measure the opening and multiple by 3 to get your length. You can tack the folds or pleats into place, velcroe them or string them from a rod or cable. Pleating is not hard nor is box pleating. It will be a visual improvement over the wide swath of fabric. I do like the red fabric choice however, just not the wide uninterrupted swath. An Elvis painting on black velvet could achieve the same look.

The egg separate that you have linked to is atrocious. Disgusting.
I've never used the garlic peeler but it looks interesting and for five bucks I would buy it.
Spoon rests are unnecessary. I know many of you love them. I dislike unnecessary clutter in the kitchen. When they are not in use, they sit on the stove 24/7. I'm with the reader who sets her cooking spoon on her stove and then cleans her stove top when she is done cooking. Or, use a saucer. I love my saucers as spoon rests.
As a carbovore, I've overdone it thousands of times on pata quantities so I can see the benefit of a pasta measuring thing. At the same time, reading the directions and using simple math can get me to the right quantity.
The kitchen gadget I love Love LOVE is my chopper. I have high quality knives and I have solid knife skills but for mincing onions, celery and garlic, I always use my chopper. Chicken salad is ready in under five minutes. And, clean up is super easy. Every thing rinses clean.
I also love my apple peeler. It's unitasker but in the fall, when making apple pies and apple desserts, the apple peeler is Bomb-diggity.

Love the yellow. It will still be cheery during those Minnesota winters. You're in SLP, right?

Yowza. I would refinish it. No high gloss white. It's a classic piece with classic lines. Keep the wood and pay someone to refinish it professionally inside and out. This a piece of furniture you will never want to part with. Do it right.

I like the warmth plus the vibrant use of colors throughout. The green in the living room actually works for me. That poster above the leather sofa is too high. Drop it down a few inches and don't center it. When you're sitting in a chair in the living room admiring it, you'll injure the T1 or T2 because of the high angle. I agree with the comment to place the dining table parallel to the windows. Love the black and white kitchen floor. The bathroom is killing me: no color at all, not even black. Will.I.am Drop the beat now!

I am totally going to rip off the kitty dinner table idea!!! I don't have six cats but the two divas I have will love the silver tray and glass pedestal compotes. You have many interesting choices throughout your home. Especially like the kitchen cabinets and the fibers you're using in the kitchen (table runner, rug). The vintage art is super cool. Thanks for sharing.

Be flexible. It doesn't have to be perfect on day one. Keep trying things. It's a process. How deep is your love? Barry Gibbs hired a decorator.
Don't make the mistake of unloading all of your stuff. I did that and ended up living with bad outdoor wildlife art (my X's idea of good taste).

That was very good, Beth, Thank you! I'm not a heavy duty tracker of receipts but with home repairs et al I need to be more attentive. Current system is loose receipts in a basket -- no order whatsoever. Also, intend to help a friend organize receipts and invoices for his growing business. These common sense tips will help to reign in the order and keep tabs on expenditures (payables and receivables). Great ideas about archiving, too.

I love the black socks. I think this dude has a great urban look. They're tongue in cheek. Not everything has to be perfect and ideal. If they're poly-blend, not so good. But the look is working for me. Dude: Call me!!!

Yikes. The dialogue is very interesting and heated. Is anyone losing their login/comment status because of violating AT's comment policy? Does chest thumping qualify as "adding value to the conversation?"

I once saw some mice disco dancing underneath one of these things. I'm not sure if they were gay. One of them was wearing a Members Only jacket.

Frogs!!!!! They're floral frogs. Use them to arrange flowers. Or pencils. Or watercolor brushes. Or chopsticks. Or licorice. Or uncooked spaghetti. Or straws. Or bread sticks. Very, very thin bread sticks. Think of the possibilities.......

Alright. I'm leaving work right now for a cheeseburger.

Great suggestions all! Many burger epicureans out there representing!

Lettuce and tomato on the bottom to keep the lower half of the bun from getting soggy. I like my burgers greezy.

Cheese? Absolutely. Swiss is ideal.

Toasted buttered bun with a schmear of sour cream.

Grilled onions. Although a raw red onion is also deelish.

Dill pickles.

OMG. I need to get out of here. I am jonesing hard.

Wow! Major cool factor. Traditional home with a modern, quirky and clever interpretation. NOTHING about it is worthy of hate and the dining room especially ROCKS! The Blue is strong but it totally works. You have a great eye. Please decorate my crib.

Wow. Great dialogue. What a conversation!

A few years ago, I rented a pick up and drove to the Schaumburg IKEA to furnish a bedroom and office. When I moved 3 years later, the armoire and bookshelves went into a dumpster. On behalf of Mother Earth I shed a tear and and vowed to never again buy disposable furniture. The furniture did not stand up to regular use and wasn't worth the expense of moving to a bigger house. I was disappointed with the short shelf life and that it was disposable design.

I still shop at Ikea but will not buy any major pieces. Instead, I'll save up and buy something that will last decades. Accessories, pillows (great pillows!), frames, maybe a lamp (but vintage is better), kitchen gear, textiles are the primary things I'll spend dollars on. It is 'design within reach." But, my conscience can't handle disposable. I expect more and there are better options.

Reuse. Repurpose. Recycle.

ps Did someone actually say that corporations sponsor hate? Can we agree not to politicize AT? Thanks.

Major cool factor with a twist. Love it. You are one cool cat. Thanks for sharing. It all works together to create an ice cold vibe: the copulating possums, the Buster Brown rug, the clock/torchiere, the vintage signage.... I want to hang out, drink cocktails, smoke a few Marlboro Lights and listen to lots of Coltrane. Extra points for the kitty kat.
