I've always wanted to see an epic romanticist style painting of a group of chickens taking down a tiger.

I get eggs from my own backyard hens. We don't refrigerate, and (with the exception of knocking off any bits of dirt or poo) we only wash them just before we're going to use them. That said, I do keep them in a bowl away from any fresh vegetables and I don't let them touch my working surfaces until after they're washed.

I think many people have a pretty narrow concept of what is historically appropriate. A really bright color like chrome yellow is actually very historically correct, it just would not have been frequently seen because of the cost of the pigment.

I'd go with a light yolk orange or apricot color, white trim and a cerulean blue door. Play up the Miami/Caribbean colors and use a lot of planters for structure when you remove the lawn.

Goats are great for clearing brush, but they'll eat your lawn down to the roots. For a neatly trimmed lawn, sheep are they way to go.

I always remember reading about Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's residence in Mexico City that was made of two separate houses connected by a bridge. I always thought that was one of the most brilliant homes ever built.

Benjamin Moore's Elephant Gray is a very nice warm midtone gray.

The fireplace is actually fine. The mantel needs to be updated and the interior paint scheme needs to be changed. I'm tending to agree with most of the posters that there needs to be a monochromatic color scheme in the room that's a light gray or cool white. Bring color in with accessories.

The mantel should be an overscale warm tone natural wood and set lower than the current mantel - maybe something with a miter so that the mantel can wrap the corner as well. Refrain from "decorating" mantel too much. I'd opt for a simple display of colorful glass pieces - set asymmetrically toward the corner.

Ideally, you'd be able to change the finish on the floor to a lighter gold tone (like white oak) color and match the mantel to that. If that's not possible try to get the mantel color close to the floor color, but not as dark.

I know everyone thinks neutral, but my heart tells me that this house needs the trim/soffet to be a mid century pink and the door wants to be a yellow chartreuse.

See chartreuse and apple blossom from the Sherwin Williams suburban modern collection.

Don't assume everything should be a 50/50 split and be thorough when you're coming up with a budget. Divide expenses into two categories - evenly shared and proportional.

Evenly shared is for expenses that would cost the same regardless of location, size etc. Things like groceries, water (everyone showers and drinks water) and garbage.

Proportional is for things that vary in cost based on amenities or demand - like rent.

The proportional should be divided based on proportion of total income between the cohabitants. That way - if one person who makes a larger salary wants a more expensive/larger apartment, they can proportionally pay for it.

I know it seems complicated, but it helps prevent future resentment in a big way.

We have a similar sunny bedroom with south facing windows. I painted the walls "devine glass" and the ceiling "devine medallion". www.devinecolor.com
The glass color is like a multi-hued gray that has green, lavender or even brown undertones depending on the light.

A friend of mine bought a house on Peacock Lane a few years ago. They actually have a clause in the sale contract that obligates anyone who buys a house on the street to put up Christmas lights.

I think this space is perfect for two love seats facing each other and flanking the fireplace.

Then, you can do a console along the "south" wall, and a demilune table with two occasional chairs in the bay. The desk should go under the window in the "northwest" corner. (using directions to describe orientation in the drawing, not the actual direction).

A day bed along the "east" wall, and a round dining table in the transitional space. (assuming the kitchen is on the other side of the doors somewhere).

I would definitely start with draperies. Use a chintz, if you want to add pattern, and then pull the accent colors from the fabric. Go floor to ceiling on both windows. I would try to stay close to the wall color for the base of the fabric, but look for something with maybe a little chinoiserie and a nice pomegranate red print with a little black, gold and ivory.

Then you can start adding more pops of red around the room - like a large vase on the console. Maybe eventually change out the rug for a more traditional Persian rug in a red color.

Thanks rosenatti!

@oaks - our ceilings have an orangepeel/splatter texture. It can make the color appear a shade darker in some light. That's why we went with a contrasting color rather than trying to match.

The ceilings in our living room are a light latte color as well and our walls are a mid-tone khaki. The latte color is just enough to warm up the room.

A deep chocolate brown. It will extend the space back and make it look bigger/roomier. You might consider painting the steps and the entire foundation the same brown color.

Then you can hang a bright orange or red wreath on the door and it would really pop. A bit like a lantern flame at the end of a tunnel, inviting you in.

I have seen brushtail pet food at my local grocery store. So, the meat can be used. I don't know the percentage that is utilized, but it is happening.
