@MrsCake that sounds like one of the best gifts to a foodie, from a foodie, that I've ever heard. Useful, thoughtful and personal.

As for me, I treasure my space so small, unusual and consumable things are my favorite to receive. Fancy honey, saffron and very special chocolate all delight me.

Nice! What a commitment to period style, very well put together. Also Covet Garden is new to me :)

Very nice mix of cozy and spare in the third photo with the blue velvet chair and gold mantle... I often think of gold as ornamental and baroque, love seeing look clean and simple.

It's funny to me how many people have only commented on their choice based on how it looks. Living in NYC, the land of take-out addicts, I think of open shelves as a commentary on how often a resident actually COOKS in their kitchen. I cook often and I don't shy away from meat and oil in pursuit of yumminess, so open shelves are unthinkable to me...oil and grease would, over time, get EVERYwhere! Give me nice glossy closed cabinets that a) hide my stuff and make my kitchen look tidy at all times and b) are easy to wipe clean.

Looks like a fun project to make with your kids. Not my idea of 'modern' or sophisticated in any way though.

I bought two white Helmer drawer units from IKEA to finish my black-and-white bedroom and could not be happier with my choice. Very practical for hiding all that misc bedside clutter, small enough to fit in a slim space, and on wheels so they're easily moved when I make the bed.

I have always organised my clothing by color and type. Each type (pants, blouses, dresses) gets put in a block. Even my socks are divided into dark and light. When stumbling about in the morning, eyes half closed, this is the only way I manage to properly dress myself.

If you have a shred of self esteem and a sense of your own boundaries, I don't see how a guest can pose problems. You agree on the length of stay ahead of time, tell the guest when you are free to hang out with them, and suggest places for them to go. Maybe you let them borrow your key. If they are your friend, they will respect you, your home, your space, and your time. If they do not respect these things, they are not your friend and you should feel no remorse letting them know it. Sheesh.

@ venus_thames: Why on earth would you put up with that sort of behaviour from anyone? I can't imagine how it got that far. It boggles my mind.

I love having guests come to visit and really enjoy doing some touristy-things with people from out of town who are truly excited to be in NYC, I think it's fun. I just had the most wonderful guest for three days and we had a blast!

A single tall glass vase with or without fresh flowers. I sort of like that there isn't anything on it and would resist the urge to clutter it much; the piece already has a sort of 'cluttery' look from all the drawers and curves.

What the hell is wrong with a blue toilet? I love blue! I'd do the whole bathroom blue and white if it were my blue toilet. IMHO it's the yellowish floor and the UGLY brown wood windowframe and paper holder that ruin the place (judging from that picture). And what is that, a wine red-brown shower curtain? Eek. Paint all the wood white and embrace the blue!

Why anyone would do this is beyond me. It sort of looks like ears. Maybe the owner of this pillow lonely and desperate for company?

Totally hot. Totally awesome looking. Totally not for *@^$87 sitting on! Sheesh. Some furniture has a higher purpose than being "comfortable" and "useful". Philistines!

I like this look, I like decorating with interesting glass, but when buying secondhand or from ebay......BE CAREFUL. Some things you may not really want to drink from. I stick to using such things for artsy arrangements, bud vases, etc.

West Elm makes cheap and cheap-looking stuff. It photographs well but go see it in person before you decide. A bed is an investment; get the one from Room & Board.
