Someone mentioned a variation of my favorite, the Chinese 'you tiao' -- deep fried dough strips eaten with hot, unsweetened soy milk.

Try a couple of layers of dense egg crate foam if you don't quite want the rigidity of plywood.

i liked magnaverde's thoughts, but thought the biblical reference was a little self-serious. perhaps my comment sounded more harsh than it needed to be - my bad.

magnaverde's comments (manifesto?) on trendiness are well taken, but was citing jesus really necessary?

This is one of my favorite old standbys - very quick to put together. I learned to make it by watching my grandmother, and now prepare it all the time. The combination of sweet and savory is very satisfying. It's also great over jasmine or long grain rice. Finish it with a smidge of Sriracha and you're golden.

Great find. Looks like the one with casters doesn't have decorative perforations in the table top. Both are nice, though!

Ixnay on farting in China or Japan! Of course, if there's a slip-up, hosts would look the other way so as not to cause embarrassment to the guest. That, of course, isn't the same as welcoming the act.

A better compliment to the chef would be tasting and eating food with enthusiasm. But, always leave a little at the end, so your host doesn't think he or she was unable to satisfy your appetite.

The NYTimes' Dining Section has an article on the new app Urbanspoon: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/16/dining/16note.html?ref=dining

Seems like a lot of apps tantalizingly offer something I'd want, but fall somewhat short in the execution. They do, though, make the ipod touch a way to have some iphone functionality without being indentured into one of those ridonkulous service plans.

I just read on today's Unplggd about an online vehicle for divvying up the chore list ... Avoid the post-it-note at all costs! If you have to label your food, toiletries, or other sundries, it's time to talk.

I'm trying to find the same information for my timber loft in Chicago. I'm part of a pretty large building, and just posted a note downstairs about assembling a group of people to all compare notes/purchase ceiling insulation services at the same time (and to hopefully benefit from a group discount). Feel free to contact me if you want to share local research: taylor ((at)) taylorhokanson ((dot)) com

google maps' "street level" feature will allow you to see a 360 degree view of this house (1737 w. ohio street).

i live in this neighborhood and can say from seeing it on walks that it looks like it was designed taking the surrounding neighborhood into account.
