I made my first play kitchen out of a breadbox I found at our thrift store. I spray painted the whole thing, painted burners on the top and made the flip down the oven and we stored all of the little stuff inside. It was the perfect size for our small house and lived on a shelf.

Even better is to do some summer volunteering, like this program near me in Madison, WI - http://www.mompop.org/SummerVolunteeringProgram.html - they encourage creative stuff (plan and host a movie night, have an airplane throwing contest and give admission fees to a local nonprofit; host a neighborhood food drive). And if the whole family participates kids learn even more!

Love this list! Especially the idea to bring along a screw driver - ingenious.
