I dig it. But then, we brew coffee with a Chemex at my house and this looks like a more hands-off version of the same. I will say that the footprint doesn't seem much larger than a regular Mr. Coffee-type coffee maker.

Intelligentsia sells a siphon brewer kind of in this mode for $100: http://www.intelligentsiacoffee.com/product/merchandise/yama-siphon-brewer

@Janus42: I think the editors may have fixed the link. Here's what I got when I clicked through: http://www.chow.com/recipes/13694-spiced-cranberry-sangria

Hubs and I are both writers. I've also taught, so we keep them for reading/reference more than decor.

This has been a fun thread to read. I have a full set of Eva Zeisel/Crate & Barrel dishes, including the serving pieces, and we use them for both everyday and special occasions. However, everyday dinners are usually plated in the kitchen. We only break out the serving pieces (not to mention cheese plates, candlesticks, etc.) when the occasion calls for it.

I would love to get a set of silver flatware sometime, but our everyday set (Alessi) is special enough for now!

Apologies for being off-topic here: @nellymom... you're still going with the reflux at 18 months?! My son is 10 months now and I feel like the spitting and discomfort will never end. But everyone tells me he should outgrow it by a year...

As for sheets, I have 3 that I share between two kids. But we need more. I think 6 total would be ideal for our setup.

Expect problems! We bought a home in pretty good condition--it was old (50+ years) but we were the second owners and while the baths and kitchen were outdated, it was in really good shape. But then our area had two years of historic flooding, which meant our basement, which had been dry for decades (not just according to the seller--neighbors, too) got over two feet of water. TWO summers in a row! We had insurance, but insurance didn't really cover our losses, not by any stretch.

Also, we have had a few minor leaks around windows, etc. And a couple of small electrical problems. AND an extremely drafty room that needed repairs. And on and on. So while the house is not a money pit, we have had two huge unforseen expenses and have otherwise been nickeled and dimed to death.

Next time, I'm not buying unless I have a big (say, $20k) savings fund that is only for house repairs. And I'm not going to bother with any place that needs a new kitchen or bath... little house fixes keep us busy enough.

I swapped my snapdragons for mums outside, and I'm changing up my indoor flower displays, too (well, as much as the grocery store selection will permit). We have a little uncarved pumpkin on the table outside. At Christmas, maybe a wreath.

Minimalists, for sure... especially for people with kids.

You take great advantage of the light. It feels delightfully Californian--elegant, unstuffy, fresh.

I love the mixed materials! I do think the pattern of the wood block feels a little too much like a kitchen piece for my taste. But it's 90% there.

Baked apples
Poached pears
Fruit with cream
Fruit fools
Carrot Halva
Nougat
Ice cream
Chocolate covered fruit
Figs and syrup
Turtles and other homemade chocolates
Nut brittle
Pavlovas

Some of these are more like nibbles, but I do think people wouldn't complain about homemade chocolates and some coffee or tea!

Also, while some Passover recipes use matzoh, there are also many wheat-free options (nature of the holiday).

@hollimonster: maybe another grain that can be cooked into a porridge, like amaranth? I imagine the oats help bind them into bars.

This looks fantastic. Planning to bake some tomorrow!

This feels too enclosed for me. It may well be safe but I don't think I'd feel comfortable putting a baby in it.

That's beautiful. Also good to know one can buy moss at a florist's shop (no moss growing around my place).

Just logged on to report the same news as others have... these containers splinter when they break. Once we broke one, we had to get rid of ours (we have a crawler at home and couldn't risk missing some shards, esp since they break so easily).

Does anyone know how these fare? http://www.crateandbarrel.com/kitchen-and-food/food-containers-storage/small-glass-refrigerator-dish/s506346
