I suggest painting or glazing the molding covering the fabric panels in a light gray. They over-power the fabric panels a bit too much.

out goes the incadescent, in goes more petrolium prodcution for make-up! Have you ever put make-up on under fluorescents? I walk outside and look like a prostitute.

HUGE QUESTION: how do you clean sisal carpets? I've had sisal rugs in the past and I find it extremely difficult to get particles out- even with a vacuum.

I am a fan. I think of this home as something similar to the controlled chaos of a Jackson Pollock painting.

I only like EC's post and comments to get rid of current throw pillows.

My suggestion: get two or three leather pillows in a silver leaf finish for the couch. then you are adding some balance - and the silver finish would a) go with the legs of your tables and b) be totally fun and not clash with the intensity of Sasha-

don't add matching color all over the room- that is what the older generation did- have everything match- the silves pillows however, would add a little edge without competing

put the table against the wall with the window or even better- like everyone else said center it in the room if you have the space. you have too much brown in similar hues. add carpet

Get rid of the multiple, small storage containers under your furniture and on top of your tall book shelves. these clutter more than your collections do.

Then I'd suggest getting rid of the old fashioned drapery rods and do a very minimal/clean window treatment- maybe some kind of roman shade- and have the shades be the same color as your walls (whether white as is, or if you change the color ala other ATers advice)

Then, get some new lighting- i think you lighting is lacking (the cool cone shaped) and the little orange ball are both the wrong size for their location- wrong height next to all your funiture behind couch and that orange ball is way too small.

So yes, minimal window treatments and new, better proportioned lighting...

1) Paint hardware and shelves all same color as white walls
2) If you can afford to, buy thicker shelves
3)remove shelving above fireplace
4) paint entire fireplace all the way to the ceiling high-gloss Black
5)Go to BBand Beyond or some space and buy 6 or 8 full length mirrors (about $10 each) and paint the frame white or remove frame perhaps.
6) evenly space out shelves and adhere mirrors to back of shelves which will a) hide more if the hardware and b) make your small apartment seem much sunnier and larger
7) and Yes, switch out that ceiling fan for something more appealing to you
8) I would either buy two trunks on castor wheels or 4 of those square ottomons with storage inside of them and throw pillows on top and place under the shelves- you can store your off season clothes and when friends come over they can pull them off the wall for instant entertainment seating. wahooo!
