If you dry the pasta, can you store it in the cupboard? I have always been afraid to keep it at room temperature because of the eggs. I was inspired by your pasta-making article several years ago, and I think I will try again. Thank you!

I actually tried this - I had some shortbread dough in my freezer for a few months. When I thawed and baked a few this weekend, it simply was not as good as fresh baked. It had a strange taste to it. The wrapping may not have been tight enough, or I did something else wrong in the storage, but I would not advise freezing homemade cookie dough for more than a month.

If you cannot reconnect with your initial positive feelings about the house, you should rethink purchasing. That said, I agree with the many posters above who said that the tragedy is past, and you can make the space a happy loving home.

I have that porcelain bust in the last frame, bought it years ago, and the store did not know anything about it. Does anyone here know? Love all the pottery and porcelain.

I would suggest looking into companies that do the legwork for you. I know that Apartment Detectives in DC is good, and I think the investment is worth it in terms of your time and sanity. Give them the areas you want, the amount you can afford, and they will tell you if it is possible. Or give you the reality and suggest something else.

I am so glad you have the original tile, and what looks like the original medicine cabinet in the bathroom. Also very pleasantly suprised to see you have an actual bedroom. Wonderful apartment.

I am sorry "cluttered" - when I first drafted my response, there was a comment (since removed) that included that word. And I forgot to mention the preserves on the kitchen shelves - also wonderful.

I love the bed in the last picture - it looks like part of a sterling silver tea service! I would not say cluttered. I think the home has a museum feel to it. So much of the original is still intact (I think the hours of paint removal from the woodwork was well spent) and the art and furniture are just beautiful - they make you want to stop, study and think.

I find, as one of the posters above, I am most creative when I am being frugal with things about to expire or leftovers. On my own, with a kitchen filled with good food, I don't know what to do. I always end up with some kind of pasta sauce, omelettes, or an antipasta plate. I love to cook when I am inspired by a recipe (with pictures) from a blog. I think all those 30-minute or less dinners after work may have stifled my individual creativity in the kitchen.

I never even thought about his art being too "matchy" with a room he has designed. I have always been intrigued by his creativity. The art seems (to me) to simply come to him when he and his team are working very hard on the reality of the room remake.

Morroccan food uses a lot of orange water: http://moroccanfood.about.com/od/moroccanfood101/tp/Moroccan_recipes_with_orange_flower_water.htm

Also look for madeleine recipes - many include orange blossom water.

This is so inspiring to read! I am not lazy or uncreative after all. I have been eating out, cooking pasta and tossing it with butter, oil or bacon fat and parmesan, eating margarine sandwiches and cookies from CVS. Some of it is the change in season and available food, but I think it is also because I have not done the spring cleaning thing, and my kitchen does not feel like a great place to work now. What a great question. Thought provoking.
