Tito's Vodka is really fantastic, smooth, and well-priced. I think I bought a handle for about $25, and a 750ml comes in just under $15. Best Bargain Booze: 7 Top Picks From Bar Experts Straight Up Cocktails and Spirits | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn |

@abbytail I still don't like the shelf above a baby's crib. What if the shelf itself is structurally unstable (even if you can vouch for wall integrity)? What if a car crashes into your house and shakes the stuff off the shelf? Just gives me the heebie jeebies, and I don't even have kidlets yet. It seems I'm agreeing with a consensus that's already apparent, but it does indeed come across as awfully warm and a little too peachy for the space. A light blue shade would be great - I can see the print you have (the one on the right of the set of three), and something that's on display above the bookshelf (a skateboard?) that could be great pieces for wall-color inspiration. You could just buy a huge canvas, paint it however you'd like it to be (bold, graphic, etc), and then lean it up against the wall behind the couch, pulling the couch out from the wall a bit so you can see the canvas behind it. Or you could build a shallow box/shelf (i.e., fitting over the fireplace and maybe 4-6 inches out from the wall), paint it/wallpaper it, and then treat it like a mantle and lean/hang a canvas on top or put some tall vases or whatever you'd like. I like it a lot! The tone-on-tone checkerboard of the cork is fantastic; it has a subtlety the black-and-white lacks, but still has a lot of visual punch. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Update from Black and White: Patterned Cork Kitchen FloorCountry Living |

What about putting the bed on the right wall of the kitchen (the one separating it from the entry area), headboard up against the kitchen wall, and then hanging a curtain at the foot of the bed extending a bit past it in either direction? According to the floor plan you have 12' there to work with, and a bed is like 6'-6" with a headboard. A curtain hung from the ceiling would keep it from being what you see immediately when you come in (assuming that the door is in a similar position in the configuration you actually have). I don't think you'll be able to stain them without stripping them. I think your best bet in a rental is a liberal use of area rugs (with some effort you can find some that very nearly fill the whole floor). They're really beautiful floors, in good shape, and a nice neutral blondish wood; I think the bits that stick out past the area rugs will bother you much less than the entire expanse of hardwood. And you can get lovely light rugs for the washed-out look, rather than staining. Apartment Therapy New York | Good Questions: Staining Parquet Floors? |

I'd only display the handful of objects you like the most, and keep those out (rotating as new things come in). If anyone asks about the hideous tsotchke they got you, you can tell them that you loved it, but because your space is so limited, you can really only keep out the one item from them that you love the most, which is the [thing] you have in the [upstairs bathroom, basement rec room, &c.]. This route serves the triple purpose of (a) getting you to display some things that might not be exactly your taste but have sentimental value, (b) limiting the amount of things you have to keep/do that with, and (c) setting up an easy way to send a clear but polite hint that you don't need any more household objects.
