I loved the overall vibe of Costanoa, and esp. the beautiful landscapes. However, our tent cabin experience was weird. Everything looked nice, but when we woke up in the morning, there were tons of these shiny little beetles all over the down comforter and even on my boyfriend's face. I wasn't sure what they were at first, but then one moved. When I reported this to the front desk clerk, she looked at me blankly and charged us full price, without even offering to check it out. If I wanted bugs in my bed, I'd just sleep in a regular tent and bring my own down comforter!

I just bought a beautiful book (called Superb Cabins) that showcases cabins in modern styles (most with small square footage). Not all of the examples include furniture, but it gives a good idea of spare, nature-oriented dwellings. Here's the amazon link:

hee hee. These are entertaining... We've had many good houseguests, but I'll share a story about the worst. My husband's college friends from Canada came to visit (the first time I had met them). Practically the first thing one of them did was grab our copy of the NYTimes and take it into the bathroom. Ok, I tried not to be judgmental or grossed out. But as soon as he came out, he asked if he could borrow some toenail clippers. I said I didn't have any. Then one of them looked at the vintage croquet set that was a wedding gift to my parents. They had passed it on to my husband as a gift. The house guests knew this story, but suggested that we play croquet on the TRAIN TRACKS. When I expressed discomfort at this, they said, "well, the set doesn't belong to you, does it?" I felt like I was in some surreal bad dream...

Ouch. My n'hood in East Oakland got a 49. Most grocery stores listed are actually corner liquor stores. By all standards, my neighborhood could be called suburban, but lacks the livable aspects of the burbs. To make this tool really useful, it should somehow cross-reference crime stats, unemployment rates and school scores, which all speak to a general atmosphere that would inspire or deter walking.
