Definite improvement! So much brighter now. I do think the cool tones clash a bit with the warmer toned tile. That could easily be off-set if there were more wood tones and greenery in the design. Perhaps if the table were left in its wood finish and a couple of houseplants were added here and there would add a little warmth to the space and blend the floors in. Unfortunately I have those same tiles with the dark grout but probably won't be replacing them, so seeing this re-do has given me some direction.

I read the article, and I can't get past the fact that the author is purporting the fallacy that we NEED salt in our diet- No we need sodium, salt is sodium chloride and we don't need the chloride, in fact our bodies must eliminate chloride to maintain health and that is why ingesting salt causes thirst. Sodium can be obtained from many nutritional sources other than salt and salt absolutely contributes to many health problems, especially adrenal disfunction.

Wow, love this makeover, changing the size and shape of the shower was very impactful in making the space feel more luxurious. Also I love white bathrooms with just a punch or two of outrageous color, so the bathroom looks clean and pristine but allows you to not take it too seriously. The charcoal wall grounds the space, while the print introduces some warm tones. PERFECTLY done!

I have had this mattress for about a year and after a month sleeping on it decided it was too firm and got a mattress topper that made it agreeable. Not sure the mattress was worth the $1000 I paid (king), but of it lasts for 25 years like the warranty implies without flattening or renting, then I will consider it money well spent.

This article makes me think. I definitely keep to myself and will engage in small talk or say hello to a neighbor, but not interested in establishing a friendship with any of them. Are these walls are just a product of being an introvert.

I like the idea of sleeping separately as a habit instead of occassionally when he falls asleep on the couch. I love sleeping with my 3 year old and will soon have a newborn, even though we have a king size bed, it might be a tight squeeze with all 4 of us, especially since I will have to be between the newborn and toddler. I think my husband is going to see a lot more of the guest room in his future. I don't see sleeping separately affecting our sex life, we have sex often and many times have to use the guestroom anyway. We only cuddle while we are awake, once we start dozing off we separate anyway.

Love the NY poster, it is such a personal touch considering the boys parents met there and perhaps owe their existence to the city:) I also find it very inspiring that the whole family is living in a 2 bdroom 1 bath home!

Awesome way to repurpose ugly cheap shelving units, lumber can be pretty expensive as cM custom cabinets, this is a great project for the burgeoning carpenter.

I am currently in the process of gold-leafing a laminated king-sized "carved" headboard and absolutely did not properly prepare the surface by sanding (SMH, overeager and didn't plan) so I am hoping it holds up because so far I have spent about $40 on the gold leafing and supplies and may need to spend between $20-30 more to complete it, the headboard itself was $25, so $100 all together. It looks really good so far, but having trouble getting gold leafing into all the nooks and crannies. Does anyone have any experience with the gold leafing paint? I am headed to the craft store today to see if they carry it...

I think I could appreciate the color more if the lighting were better, it just looks like a dark color from the pics... maybe its my monitor. Either way I only have an idea of the color from your description.

I definitely know where you are coming from. When I lived in a studio and 1 bedroom apartment having guest or temporary "roommates" always got to the point where I felt imposed upon. However living in a house with a guestroom and extra bathroom makes it to where certain friends or family members could stay for extended periods and it wouldn't bother me in the least. I think it becomes an issue of sharing space.

Love it! Simple changes with big impact, that fridge NEEDED to be moved! I also like that they had no qualms about losing the dishwasher, I always handwash dishes and use mine for a drying rack:( It would be so much better to free that space up for something more useful. The garden is lovely and very inspiring!

I can't wait to see if I'll be "rewarded" for my smugness when I have this 2nd child, but I don't see what the big deal is. When my son was a newborn I would lay him on a folded blanket on the bathroom floor while I showered for 5 minutes, he usually was fine but if he got fussy I'd let him fuss until I finished, usually a few minutes. I can wash all the important stuff within minutes and my hair is kinky curly, so I only wash it once or twice a week at most.

I picked out differnt but somewhat coordinating stockings for each person in the house, including our 2 dogs. I tried to pick stockings that kind of fit each of our individual style. Like mine is red quilted flannel with flutterly snowflake appliques, my husbands is bright red with an almost lime green trim and his first initial boldly appliqued on the cuff, our toddler has a red felt stocking appliqued with a reindeer in lime green and aqua. And the dogs each have a tiny red velvet stocking embellished with glittery swirls, just big enough to stuff a few dog treats... I don't think they appreciate it though...

Cute, funny, and just a little creepy:) Also, I agree with username26, "like a catalogue" relates that a space feels impersonal/staged. There has to be a casual element in even the most formal of spaces in order for a place to feel livable, and while we look to catalogues perhaps for inspiration, its the personal effects that make a space really feel like home.

@jrossi1217, I agree, it kind of hints at and re-affirms that being vegetarian is "sooo other" and also re-inforces that meat-centric meals are the norm. On a site like this, you would expect that the contributors would get that you don't have to be vegetarian to not be meat-centric... no disclaimers needed.

Even still, really appreciate this post:) 2 thumbs up!

I have to agree with most of the commentors, If given another option I definitely wouldn't chose to live in a gross building. I did it once while living in L.A., I moved into this 100 year old building in Koreatown, a cute little studio for $1000/month- I caught 6 mice in 1 month, had to listen neighbors mexican rodeo music on what would have otherwise been quiet Sundays, and gang activity on the block. Not to mention there was no reserved parking, and street parking was hellacious, looking back I don't know how I did it, and will NEVER, God-willing, do it again!
