My suggestion: jambalaya. Won't make a huge dent in your stores of pearl barley, but it is delicious.

Chipotle popcorn. Had it at a party last weekend and it was crazy addictive:

During architecture school, I brought a rice cooker to drafting studio to, (of course) make rice and warm up leftovers. The sounds and smells drove everyone around me nuts. Not sure I'd inflict it on others again.

Seeking opinions: How badly mannered is it to sit "a cat's length" away from the table? I usually sit pretty close to the table and didn't realize this was a faux pas. Even with a well-placed napkin, I'm afraid of getting food on myself because I'm not especially skilled with a fork and knife (grew up using chopsticks).

Stir-fried celery: slice on the bias, and fry with some sliced onions and curry powder. Maybe a little oyster sauce at the end. Also excellent with some chicken (diced and fried just before starting the celery) or crab stick added.

There's a Chilean empanada house down the street from me and I find they're great for those in-between times when you need more than a snack but don't have time for a meal. And yeah, they're hand-sized, kinda like a Cornish pasty or Jamaican patty.

The comments have made me even curious about these food rules:
Does the rules apply only when food is meant for sharing? Or is it simply assumed that any food brought to school might eaten by someone other than the kid who brought it?
Does the nothing-homemade rule apply to school lunches too? Or do kids have to eat school-provided lunches where these rules are in place?

So different than when I grew up...

The kitchen clock was an essential part of growing up in my parents' house, so I had to have one too when I moved out. My sister bought me one as a house-warming gift and it has hung in every apartment I've lived in.

Being of Chinese origin myself, it makes complete sense. The classic cookie-like snacks that I grew up with were either stick-shaped (Pocky, for example) or wafers (I can taste the lemon-filled ones now). Gotta get my hands on some of these straw-shaped Oreos now...

@catherine:
A nice bead of caulking between the counter and the backsplash should keep water from seeping behind your cabinets. If you're really worried, I'd fold over the edges of the stainless to create a panel with a bit of thickness, so that it sits on top of your counter before you do the caulking.

If you use the right adhesive, the stainless should stay in place. I can't recommend one, but I'm sure this could be determined with a little research.

Finely chopped (or crumbled) chorizo, onions and peppers with lots of eggs.

Or for a Spanish omelette, add tiny cubes of potato and cover the frying pan to let it steam.
