Being of Chinese origin myself, it makes complete sense. The classic cookie-like snacks that I grew up with were either stick-shaped (Pocky, for example) or wafers (I can taste the lemon-filled ones now). Mine are in a cupboard above the range hood. It has all these awkward spaces because the boxed-in air duct runs right through the middle, making it well-suited for narrow upright objects. Where Do You Store Flower Vases? |

I would also recommend "Much Depends On Dinner" and "Rituals of Dinner" by Margaret Visser. They're a little on the academic side, but fascinating. Books for Cooks that Aren't Cookbooks! |

It really depends on your crowd. Up here in Canada, we had Thanksgiving last month and the 2 pounds per person rule yielded WAY too much turkey for the casual buffet-style meal I attended. A whole extra turkey's worth. How Much Turkey Per Person? Use This Rule of Thumb |

Sounds ridiculous, but I could halve the beet and sweet potato stacks to make them more cut-able. I would still feel somewhat bashful about doing it in a business or formal setting, but it would be better than doing a Jenga. Veggie Stacks & Towers: How Do You Eat Them? |

Rendering schmaltz and making gribenes. I've been saving chicken skin in the freezer for a couple of months and with the bf away for the weekend, it's the perfect opportunity to do something messy in the kitchen! What's Cooking This Weekend? Weekend of November 12-13, 2011 |

My sister once made a lantern out of a cheese grater for a night art walk/parade and hung it from a spatula. I also seem to remember a how-to for a cool-looking colander table lamp in one of my dad's old 'Nomadic Living' books from the 70s. Look! A Chandelier Made Out of Cheese Graters |

The space crunch is annoying, but the thing that irked me the most was how there was no room between the elements for a spoon rest. Who knew that having that dedicated space for implements was so crucial to my 'cooking flow'? What Are the Disadvantages of a 24-Inch Range? Good Questions |

My office (architecture) has specified back-painted glass backsplashes for a number of kitchens. It looks great, though you need to be aware of the green-blue tinge that the glass itself will add to the paint colour chosen. I don't know what surface preparation or special formulation is needed to bond the paint to the glass. There is a special construction adhesive that you can use to glue the glass to the wall -- it's normally used to glue mirrors in place. DIY Backpainted Glass Backsplashes |
