Our home philosophy is transitional. We own all the things we need, but don't love all the things we own. Knowing that in a few years we might have a very large move, we purchase only things we really love. Knowing that the less we buy for this place the more we have to purchase a home in the future keeps our spending low. Finally I like things to have character as our dorm-apartment completely lacks any.

Self-righteous crafting - It is handmade so it is automatically prettier/greener/more precious/better all around than you're purchased item. Often it's not.

For my wedding I received a glass cube stuffed with Christmas lights with our invitation glued on the front with puffy paint and stickers surrounding it. It's worse than you can imagine and it is NOT a precious keepsake.

A terrarium would look nice. Then you would have a plant the cat couldn't get at. This makes me want to build an "ecocolumn" like in elementary school.

My brother and his wife litter trained their puppies for their apartment. When they moved into a house and had a big backyard we asked them if they would poop there. My brother laughed and pointed out why should he have to walk all around the yard picking up poop when they would do just as fine continuing in their litterbox. You just have to make sure you have a big enough box and clean it out. They will usually poop around the box if it is too full.

The one worry about putting things on shelves in small spaces is that they will fall down and block your escape. If you don't mind the items being damaged, then don't worry. Unless you or any other living thing sleep under the items, then don't worry. Really, I grew up in SoCal and my entire family lived in the Valley, but you cannot always be afraid of earthquakes. Beware of fragile items, never put anything heavy where it could fall on your bed, and make sure you have a clear escape route just in case. Really if the quake is big enough to knock stuff off your shelves, then it's big enough to knock things off of tables.

For our wedding, we're buying highball and old fashioned glasses to use as candle holders. We're just going to wrap them in vellum and place on the tables.

Some nights its a party down at the BBQs. Other nights it's a concert on campus. On the good nights its the incredible chorus of frogs down in the ravine. The worst nights are the neighbors to my side banging around their house (What are they doing?)

Most mornings its the far off sound of construction for the new dorms. Often in the afternoon it's sirens from the fire station responding to lit candles and burnt popcorn in the dorms. Birds landing on the roof and airplanes landing at John Wayne.

For fellow young adults from my friend: "You are young. It takes time to gather pieces you love." I'm so impatient, and she always reminds me that it takes time to build a home full of things you love.
