for anyone using direct printouts rather than mirrored xerox, the image must be printed via toner (such as a laser printer) rather than inkjet. I find that rubbing the transfer with a bone folder or the back of a wooden spoon is more effective. Decor Tip: Chartpak Blender | Apartment Therapy New York |

please don't use a commercial spray adhesive--they are typically highly acidic, and will cause further deterioration (embrittling, yellowing, etc) over the years. you should definitely consult a professional restoration or conservation place to help you with your needs. they may determine that the piece is not super valuable, in which case you could do some basic page repairs and frame it with UV-protectant glass. or they could recommend a full repair. I'm a book artist and conservator and use tyvek in a lot of creative applications. it's super strong and makes a great material for book spines and cases, and it takes ink and pigment really well. you can dye tyvek with gouache, acrylic, or drawing inks and it maintains its flexibility and sheen. medical-grade tyvek often has a subtle perforation pattern but it picks up pigment just as well and is softer. I'm super excited to participate this year. I just moved and have a crazy work schedule, so my place is nowhere near any order. not to mention, I have creative/packrat/clutter tendencies. I was feeling a little sheepish about the hasty photos I took of my still-unpacked, unorganized apartment, but it was encouraging seeing the entire range of spaces in the Flickr pool! what timing, I just roasted a chicken last night. Outside: lemon juice, olive oil, s&p. inside: the remaining lemons, fistfuls of thyme, rosemary, and garlic, and I'll also stuff some of this under the skin. I roast on top of some veggies, whatever I have around that day, and have always deliciously browned skin with very tender meat. I live in a... "uniquely" converted brownstone, so my bathroom light also happens to be inside my medicine cabinet. I also have a tiny sink with no room for anything around it, and put in a small shelf instead. I just decided "eh, screw it" and leave the door open at all times so I can get to the switch more easily and so guests don't have to fumble around in there. Try to keep it tidy, but there's not much space in terms of storage in my bathroom anyway... Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | Survey: Bathroom countertops, cluttered or product-free? Austin |

I never thought that I'd be one to have pink curtains, but when I could only find beige, tan, and navy curtains to fit in my 10 foot high windows, I decided to make my own. While fabric shopping, I had burgundy or chocolate in mind, but then this quirky fun PINK fabric just popped out at me and I had to have it! Thanks for the suggestions, Jenny. I wound up going with the apothecary jars, mostly because they'll protect the light sensitive spices and also because they were so affordable... I'm thinking of hand-illustrating some kind of labels for them. that step-bleacher thing looks really handy though, I think I'll look around for one! :) Apartment Therapy DC | Open Thread 10 Washington, DC |

I would use my IKEA splatter screen more often, but the last time I used it on my gas stove, it started to... smoke? I didn't have the heat on too high, and I had used it just fine on an electric range. anyone else have this problem with IKEA splatter screens? maybe I should try a different brand? My modest DIY project for the month is to rehouse and reorganize my spices, and I'm trying to decide between amber apothecary-ish jars (these or these) or something else... I've seen the aluminum tins with the magnets, but they just really aren't my aesthetic. what do you use? I'm also considering how to arrange them in an accessible manner, because they will most likely be going into this 8" tall space above my sink: Apartment Therapy DC | Open Thread 10 Washington, DC |

I grew up with chopsticks, and they've carried over into everyday kitchen use... to the point that I cook just about everything with them (except pancakes and deep-fried goodies). When I cook in friends' kitchens, I feel clumsy with wooden spoons and spatulas. I guess I've gotten used to chopsticks as an extension of my cooking arm! I can't imagine a more versatile utensil.
