I would probably just paint and add under counter lighting so you can do food prep until you have a clearer idea of what you want and if you can afford it. Your cabinets are few so it would be very easy to do the prep work - the hardest part of the job - yourself. If you cannot take the doors outside to sand use a liquid sanding product to avoid dust. (My cabinets were "faced" and the quality of the doors has not held up over time.) Oil paint gives a more durable finish and a lovely sheen. Add some plants, cheerful accesories and art work and this should hold you until you have more confidence in your final choices and this way you won't be rushed. Visiting an Ikea store is always a great resource for ideas and lighting.

Make the couch disappear by painting the walls or bottom part of the walls a dark color - I cannot say because your lighting conditions and exposure will determine that. Go with the masculine flow and make some plaid pillows -with the green of the sofa and wall color in it - Black Watch maybe. You can order fabric online from Scottish tartan suppliers and glue these together with Fabri-Tac if you cannot sew. Alternatively, a dark or tartan wallpaper (Ralph Lauren, maybe) on the lower part of the walls will help the sofa disappear but keep the windows a crisp white. Aim for a monotone in paint, fabric and couch. (The couch looks comfy but don't you slip off of it when you lie down?)

I bought two rusty Platner chairs from an architect and had then replated in nickel - all for $200. They are wonderful in a small space because your eyes pass through them, because they can move between dining and living space but most wonderful of all is the senuous delight of their shape.

Is that some kind of ram's head on the bed? This is really a man-type bed and it has real presensce which is the problem and the delight of it. Don't fight the look. Even though you can't paint (why not? ) you need to balance the presensce of the bed so it is not the focal point of the room. Shift the focus to the walls by stapling or gluing with wallpaper paste some plaid fabric, at least to line the book shelves which you can takle with you when you leave. Add much larger blocks of coordinating jewel-tone colours in paisley and solids on the bed and the curtains. Think country house hunting lodge with maps, dead animals and leather. It's a pity you can't paint the walls because deep colours would make that bed disappear.

I have used Corelle/Corning for years because my chemist-mate is phobic about lead in glazes (though you can test for this it is a nuisance). However when the Corelle shatters - and I have shattered many plates over the years - it splits into pointy shards and very small bits which are very very hard to get up. They have pierced my foot twice and necessitated trips to my physician for surgery. Forewarned etc.

You already have orange/brown going on in the sofa, floor and fireplace but because of the weather in Vancouver you need to go as light and bright as possible. How about sticking with the white but add some pops of cheerful orange - perhaps in the pillows and, lucky you, Marimekko is on sale right now so you could tie the white and orange together. You need some more black on the sofa side of the room maybe in a floor or table lamp. You are more than half-way there so keep up the momentum.

So what if Martha Stewart isn't the most nurturing woman on the planet - she's not our mother or wife. She's our inspiration - impeccable taste, unlimited imagination and a lot of hard, hard work. Thank you for recognizing her accomplishments.

My 50s ranch bedrooms have wood floors that somehow escaped varnish or urethane (probably because they were covered in broadloom at some point). Having just cleaned, reoiled and waxed them I understand your love for their beauty but never would I have them anywhere else in the house, since even with only the slippers and socks of adults they just barely hold up. Don't even think about it!

You have a lovely apartment and gorgeous wood floors and fireplace so I am loving gray but what gray and even what color depends on other factors - your furniture and the amount and quality of the light to start with. So invest in some of those little pots of paint and paint up some sheets of cardboard and tape to the walls. Eventually one color will jump out as the right one, but don't touch the ceiling or the trim for now. Painting is so easy so don't be afraid of making mistakes since you can paint a room with two or three coats in a day. Invest in a large roll of that blue tape - it is a wonderful thing!

Your panelling seems nicer than most and your fireplace being very much of its period is uglier than most. If you were to paint the panelling white the fireplace would stand out even more, so paint it instead and you will still have its lovely texture. Try a various grays (even a pale taupe would look lovely with the mauve chairs) but if this oranges up the place it is easy to move to a whiter color. But first improve the lighting - regular bulbs will emphasize the warm tones so possibly go with the newer eco bulbs which have a colder light and follow someone else's suggestion to add a light-colored rug to bounce back more light.

Since light is not the problem continue with the blue-grey to tone down the presence of the cabinets and cozy up the dining area but add pops of mustardy yellow- maybe on picture frames and tea towels. Love the persian rug at base of sink idea.

Lathe-type trellises from Walmart for $12 or twig ones inserted into planters (if there is no soil near that bare wire fence) could be used to start fast-growing annual hops (or maybe perennial silver lace vine). These could be streched over wires to the opposite side of the patio to give you a cozy sheltering privacy eventually. I like the angled umbrellas idea which would work to combat the intrusion from upper stories of those apartments.

J.C. Penney's catalog use to carry foam bolsters and covers for them in a variety of colors, I have some in a cheery cherry red over placed on a khaki comforter against which I have several plaid pillows. Since I am short this arrangement is too deep for comfort but then most sofas are also too deep for comfort. It was far more comfortable with a 30 inch mattress which can still be had on special order.

The brick is ugly so paint it or put just a wash of colour over it. See how you like it before you move on to something else. Lower the mantle and try to find a more contemporary firescreen in steel perhaps that will blend with the new wall and fireplace color.

I'm guessing that you favoured one sofa over the other because of the proximity to natural light and also because you had a view of the world out that window.

Please - ignore your mate (I'm guessing the one who likes the unpainted cabinets) and PAINT those cabinets. Stylist Elizabeth Mayhew in her new book Flip... suggests B.M.'s pale green Potpourri 2029-50 for kitchens. This may bridge the gap between a retro look with the pink oven and a modern aesthetic. (I have pink countertops which I initially hated but now find acceptable and even pretty because I picked a suitable color for the walls but I will never love the Euro-look cabinets.) I think your big need looks like under cabinet lighting. Those countertops look dark and dreary but your fridge seems OK so why waste the big bucks replacing it? Do replace the hardware with a retro look (though I know you said you liked it) and scatter about a few retro tins like Mayhew and I think you have the makings of a practical and pretty kitchen.

Though I never actually purchased anything from these folks I still get their beautiful yearly catalogues and other costly promotional materials so I am not surprised they are suffering financially. It was just a matter of time before poor customer relations caught up with them. Perhaps DWR will learn a little humility now but I'm not holding my breath.

Stop! Don't paint yet! Like others here I usually abhore wood panelling but there is something special about yours. If you paint (as I have done in the past) I think you will get a country vibe. Check out Target's bedding department for the wood panelling behind a lime comforter by Dwell to see how a modern aesthetic works with wood panelling. Lovely! Go for a Japanese vibe or a Scandanavian ( see book Finnish Country Houses) one . How about several yards of a Marimekko wall panelling suspended from the ceiling, a few very modern light fixtures and a Modern Lighting fan? The vibe will change instantly. Yes to painting the fireplace, ceiling (not beams) and possibly that odd crosspiece but hold off on everything else because your situation is rare and unique - lovely wood panelling. A Scandanavian would feel right at home!
